World Team Challenge
- Bronze medalist of the “Christmas Race” 2016 paired with
Sochi 2014 Olympic champion, biathlete Alexey Volkov temporarily settled in Chelyabinsk
A Komsomolskaya Pravda correspondent approached the champion with questions about the environment and training until you drop. He found out what kind of weapon he dreams of shooting, how much a bullet and a rifle cost, how it runs on the highways of Europe, and where did the “golden” Olympic Mercedes go?
…Alexey Volkov’s collection includes six gold medals from the World Cup stages. The same number of victories at the European Championship. For this achievement, he has no equal on the planet. Two top podiums at the World Summer Biathlon Championships, multiple Russian champion...
So far, the main victories in life, according to Alexey, are the birth of his daughter Arina and the relay gold at the Olympic Games in Sochi.
Few people know that Volkov and his wife Evgenia have been living in one of the new buildings near ChelSU for a year now. This winter, as an honored guest, I attended competitions among local skiers and awarded the best athletes with certificates.
It turns out that Chelyabinsk has one more Olympic champion. And what kind! Let him play for Khanty-Mansiysk...
YOU JUST HAVE TO WORK IN TRAINING
There’s so much written about Chelyabinsk on the Internet today, I don’t even know who or what to believe,” Alexey Volkov sits down more comfortably. - They talk about emissions. Maybe we athletes are used to everything, but I don’t really notice anything. An ordinary metropolis, crammed with smoky vehicles. You need to approach this issue professionally. Take instruments and measure the cleanliness of the air. What are these substances and where do they come from? And the perpetrators will be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Instead of unfoundedly shouting and blaming...
- Do you also react to criticism if our biathletes are scolded?
I react normally to criticism. Detailed criticism, as a rule, comes from people who are involved in this sport and know biathlon cuisine. This kind of criticism helps.
- Are you starting to train even more?
There are no miracles. We have to work hard in training. Our season has already begun. We were at a training camp in Bulgaria. Altitude under 2000 meters. We trained together with Anton Shipulin and Olympic champion in cross-country skiing Zhenya Dementiev.
On one of the shock days we rode up the mountain on roller skis for more than 30 kilometers. Classic plus a hobby. It took us two and a half hours to climb. It is something! Now we will train near St. Petersburg. The tasks are approximately the same volume, but we will increase the intensity.
I HAVE POOR ORIENTATION IN CHELYABINSK
You train for yourself and for your wife (she once ran for the national team - author's note)... Have you been together for a long time?
Eight years. We met at a training camp in Khanty-Mansiysk. Now we are raising a daughter. They called her Arina. We just liked the name - both us and the grandmothers.
- Almost everyone on the biathlon team is already married!
The main cast, yes. But now there are a lot of young people. They are not yet ready to get married (laughs).
- Why did you decide to settle in Chelyabinsk?
My wife's parents live here. They have their own equipment center. And in Khanty-Mansiysk there is no one to help with the child in case of my absence. We spent our vacation in the Southern Urals. We went to visit my parents in Yekaterinburg.
- Do they recognize you on the streets in Chelyabinsk?
Happened a couple of times. But I mostly travel by car. From home I run to the Shershnevsky Forest Park across the bridge. I roller ski on the track near the Elesina stadium. I still have trouble finding my way around the city. But I'm learning it little by little.
- Have you heard about plans to build a ski stadium in Chelyabinsk?
I know that they are choosing a place for construction. There is an option at Carp Pond. The descents there are quite steep. Everything needs to be done thoroughly.
- After the training camp, Alexey Volkov returns to Chelyabinsk. Does a wife greet her husband with borscht and dumplings?
I won't refuse either. But I usually order okroshka.
- Do you cook yourself?
I love to cook. I watch cooking shows and read recipes on the Internet. If I had more time, I would be happy to stand at the stove.
SECOND LOVE
- For winning the Olympics, all champions were awarded Mercedes SUVs. Where's the car?
I sold it without hesitation. I just decided to take another car.
- They say that our biathletes will start running with rifles from the Kalashnikov concern?
Several people are already running around with domestic rifles. The same Garanichev, for example, with BI-7–4. I'm with the German Anschutz for now. A rifle is a second love for a biathlete. Only I don’t sleep with her (laughs).
- A high-quality rifle is worth its weight in gold!
A small glitch and you're out of luck. The barrel alone costs me 150 thousand rubles. The quality of a barrel is when it is clamped into a special machine and 10 shots must accurately hit the same point. Our manufacturers can achieve this quality.
- Manufacturers make elite rifles to order for a specific athlete. How is that?
Under its anatomical features - shoulder girdle, back, neck, head, facial bones. There are many more subtleties.
By the way, my friend and I opened a small production of rifle parts - the stock, the base is made of aluminum, the attached parts are made of wood and carbon fiber. We make it for a specific athlete. We can fulfill any whim.
- Biathletes don’t use optics?
This is prohibited by the rules.
DON'T MIND SHOOTING FROM RPGs
- Several different questions. Have you ever had any funny things happen at the shooting range?
The biathlete on the shooting range must hold the rifle only towards the settings. Violation will result in disqualification from the race. Once in my youth, I turned to the trainer at the shooting range with a rifle in my hands, but immediately realized my mistake and pointed the rifle towards the installation. Then they forgave me, but gave me a stern warning.
- Is it true that in Europe fans along the track “kill” competitors by blowing tobacco smoke in their faces?
This happens at the World Cup stages. For example, in Oberhof, Germany. There are thousands of fans on the first long climb. But they are not doing this out of malice, they come to enjoy the holiday atmosphere. They brew mulled wine and smoke cigars. There's a smell there, I'll tell you! Everyone is trying to run up this mountain as quickly as possible, otherwise you might get drunk (laughs).
Some may be relaxing; everyone’s concept of rest at the end of the season is different. I would like to return home quickly.
The legendary Bjoerndalen ran around hot corners during training, and then sometimes immediately fired at targets...
Bjoerndalen was my idol. Now we compete side by side with him, but that doesn’t make him any less great to me. Over the coals? Extreme! I'm not a fan of such things. But if this is necessary for training, then I would run over the coals. The Europeans probably lack drive, so they are showing off. If they were born and lived in Russia, they wouldn’t even think about coal (laughs).
- The weight of your rifle?
A little over four kilograms. Previously I was generally 4.5 kg. And according to the rules, a rifle must weigh at least 3.5 kg.
- Do biathletes try their hand at shooting with other types of weapons?
I admit, I haven't tried it yet. I dream of shooting from some kind of “sniper”, for example an SVD, to hit the bull’s eye at 300 meters. You can also use a machine gun, a machine gun, an RPG... I would like to test my shooting skills with a different caliber.
- Maybe we can organize it at our tank training ground near Chebarkul.
The Russian biathlete came to the sport at a young age. Having become a multiple champion of Europe and Russia thanks to his perseverance, talent and enviable zeal, Alexey Volkov continues to delight fans with his high results. The biography of this young man is full of sporting achievements.
Carier start
Alexey was born on April 5, 1988 in the city of Raduzhny, Tyumen region.
He became interested in cross-country skiing early on, which he successfully practiced under the constant supervision of coach Andrei Kolisnechenko.
Over time, Aleksey Anatolyevich Volkov, together with his younger brother, began attending a biathlon school. Volkov worked with Ivan Zelenin and Petr Dubasov for two years before joining the junior team in 2009. And it became a real find of the Russian Championship, which took place in the Tyumen region in April 2009.
In December 2009, Alexey Volkov, a biathlete, participated in the World Cup in Sweden for the first time. But he didn’t show a very good result (he was 74th).
At the 2009 Junior World Championships in Canada, Alexey received a silver medal for participating in the individual race.
In 2009, being essentially a novice athlete, he had a fairly impressive number of medals. In addition, Alexey was awarded a large prize awarded by the governor of the Tyumen region. Volkov Alexey Anatolyevich received a new car.
To new heights
The Russian athlete strived for victory. The ambitious young biathlete took his first place at the European Junior Championships in Ufa. The second gold medal was not long in coming.
The very next year, at the 2010 European Championships in Estonia, Aleksey Anatolyevich Volkov took medals in all four disciplines: first place in the pursuit, second place in the sprint and relay, and third place in the individual race.
In February 2011, Alexey competed in the European Open and won silver and gold in the sprint and pursuit respectively.
The young athlete's career was rapidly growing. And already on December 18, 2011, Volkov took part in the race for the first time as part of a mixed team and won the competition. A year later, he made his debut as part of the men's relay.
But the life of a successful biathlete does not consist only of training and camps. Aleksey Anatolyevich Volkov graduates from Southern State University with a degree in physical education and sports. When not competing, Alexey likes to get acquainted with the architecture of other cities and visit historical places. For psychological relief, he often listens to music. Prefers Russian rap and hip-hop.
Of course, big sport is daily hard work, overcoming oneself, testing one’s personality for strength. We hope that the young biathlete Aleksey Anatolyevich Volkov will continue to bring new medals to the Russian team and conquer the steep peaks of the sport.
Biathlete Alexey Anatolyevich Volkov was born on April 5, 1988 in the city of Raduzhny, located in the Tyumen region. Even as a child, he, like his younger brother, became interested in cross-country skiing. Supporting their children in their desire to play sports, parents sent their sons under the guidance of a talented coach Andrei Kolesnichenko.
In 2003, both Alexey and Alexander Volkov, who had already achieved a fairly high level of skill in cross-country skiing, turned their attention to biathlon. Their young age allowed both skiers to change their occupation and hope for a successful career in biathlon.
It also helped that in nearby Nizhnevartovsk it was at that time that they decided to open a specialized biathlon school, where well-trained skiers capable of achieving high speeds were welcomed with open arms.
Ivan Zelenin and Pyotr Dubasov acted as mentors to young Alexei Volkov for some time, and in 2009 the athlete joined the regional junior team under the tutelage of Sergei Altukhov and Valery Zakharov. Soon after this, the biathlete took part in the World Cup for the first time in his career, at one of the stages in Sweden. However, then Alexey Volkov failed to achieve significant success: he took 74th place, very far from the prize ceremony.
Carier start
In 2009, the biathlete also competed in the individual race in Canada, as part of the World Junior Championships. This performance turned out to be much more successful for Volkov: the young athlete won a gold medal from his opponents. At the same championship, Alexey was awarded a silver medal as part of the national relay team.
The purposeful biathlete did not intend to stop there, and therefore intensively prepared for the European Junior Championships, which that year was organized on the basis of sports complexes in Ufa. At this prestigious competition, Volkov won bronze in the pursuit race and was also awarded a gold medal as part of the Russian team in the relay race.
Then Alexey was one of the most titled juniors in the whole country and even received a new car as a gift from the head of the administration of the Tyumen region as recognition of his merits.
Biathlon
Quite often, successful juniors turn into mediocre “averages” in their adult sports career, but this did not happen with Alexei Volkov. Being an excellent speed skier and demonstrating the highest shooting accuracy (about 90%, which can be called one of the best indicators), the biathlete continued to diligently prepare for the upcoming sports competitions.
A well-deserved reward for his hard work was not long in coming. In 2010, the athlete went to the European Championships, held in Estonia. Alexey competed in four disciplines and managed to win one of the prizes in each of them. So, in the pursuit race the Russian was the leader, in the relay and sprint race he received silver medals, and in the individual race Volkov was awarded bronze.
In 2010, Volkov also “fit” into the flower ceremony for the first time at one of the World Cup races. At the stage in Holmenkollen, he successfully shot and ran back in the sprint race, winning fourth place and showing the best performance at that time since the beginning of his sports career.
In the 2011/2012 season, the young biathlete took the World Cup seriously. The real breakthrough in his career happened at the beginning of 2012 in Oberhof. It was there that Alexey first competed in the men's relay at the Cup stage, and in this race the Russian representatives managed to win silver medals. Together with Volkov, famous Russian biathlon stars ran the baton, and.
The 2012/2013 season also turned out to be productive for Alexey Volkov. The athlete immediately won two gold medals at the World Cup: in Östersund, in the mixed relay race, and in Oberhof, in the men's relay race. At the same time, the athlete performed well at the Russian Open Cup. He was awarded silver in the sprint race, and managed to finish first in the pursuit race.
At the Russian Biathlon Championship in 2012, Volkov became first in the relay competition and lost to only one opponent in the mass start.
The 2013/2014 season in the context of the World Cup was marked for Alexey by receiving two silver medals: first he was on the second step of the podium after the mass start in Oberhof, and then he won the same place in the individual race, beating even his teammate Evgeniy Ustyugov. At the 2013 Russian Championships, Volkov received silver for an excellent sprint, won the same medal in the pursuit race, and also came second in the relay competition.
During the 2014/2015 season, the biathlete managed to win bronze in the relay at a difficult stage of the World Cup in Oberhof, and then received gold in the single mixed relay in Nove Mesto, where Yana Romanova became his partner.
Alexey Volkov with an Olympic medal
In 2014, Alexey Volkov, as part of the Russian national team, became the champion of the Sochi Winter Olympic Games in the relay race.
In 2015/2016, the biathlete became third in the individual race in Östersund, took silver from his opponents in the relay in Ruhpolding, and also performed best in the relay in Hochfilzen.
The 2016/2017 season has already become remarkable for the athlete, receiving “silver” in the relay race at the next stage of the World Cup in Ruhpolding.
Personal life
The athlete’s height is 177 cm, weight – 69 kg. Looking at the photo of Alexei Volkov on Instagram and other social networks, one can assume that the biathlete lives only in sports. In fact, Volkov also became concerned about obtaining a higher education, graduating from Yugoslav State University (the athlete chose the specialty “physical education and sports”).
In addition, he loves to travel, walk through historical places and get acquainted with the architecture of cities unknown to him. For relaxation, Alexey likes to listen to music, preferring hip-hop and songs of Russian rap artists.
Volkov’s chosen one was biathlete Evgenia Seledtsova, so the guys’ wedding was organized so as not to interfere with the training schedule of both athletes.
In 2015, his wife gave Alexey a daughter, Arina. However, this young sports family formalized their relationship only a few years ago, and it is likely that in the future the biathletes will have more children in the family.
