Croatian tennis player Marin Cilic has won 18 ATP titles. He reached the Grand Slam final twice and became a champion once. The former world number three came into the limelight in 2009 when he won the fourth round of the US Open. 10 years later he is still on the leaderboard. At the 2019 Australian Open, Marin was able to advance to the fourth round for the seventh time in his career.
First racket among juniors
Marin Cilic was born in Medjugorje in 1988. The village in Bosnia and Herzegovina where his parents lived did not have tennis courts. However, the father of the future champion was convinced that children definitely need sports. When conditions were finally created in the city, he immediately sent his sons to play. Marin, together with his brothers Vinko and Goran, began to actively train.
“I started playing tennis with my older brother Vinko when our father took us to the tennis club. Vinko was already too old to start playing tennis at 12, but I was at the right age. The first tournaments started when I was 8 years old. I won my first trophy, reaching the semi-finals at 10&U. I still have it at home, probably one of my favorite trophies,” Cilic recalls.
Marin began playing in the youth league in the spring of 2004. He soon qualified for the US Open, but did not make it past the second round. However, a year later, the tennis player won the French Open in singles, beating Andy Murray in the semi-finals and Antal van der Duim in the final. This moved Cilic to second place in the rankings behind Donald Young. On a recommendation, Cilic moved to San Remo, Italy to work with trainer Bob Brett. Later Goran himself worked with him.
Important victories of Marin Cilic
In 2006, Marin entered his first ATP tournament in Zagreb. He was soon selected for the Davis Cup team. This helped Cilic move on and win two Challenger tournaments in Casablanca and Rijeka. Ahead of him was his first victory at a professional ATP tournament.
In 2008, Cilic reached the semi-finals at the Chennai Open in singles and doubles. In singles he was defeated by Mikhail Youzhny. The Croatian then reached the fourth round of the Australian Open. Thanks to these results, Marin managed to get into the top 40. He also reached the fourth round at Wimbledon. At the 2008 Olympics, the tennis player reached the second round of the men's singles. Seeing the player’s potential, Fila signed a contract with him.
With his sights set on winning Grand Slam titles, Marin Cilic once again reached the fourth round of the Australian Open. He also helped his country defeat their Chilean opponents in their first round Davis Cup singles match. In a duet with Mario Ancic, he became the doubles champion. Another fourth round awaited the tennis player at the 2009 US Open. There he met Murray again, but this time he was able to get around him. This is how Marin made it to the quarterfinals for the first time.
2014 US Open
In 2010, Marin Cilic went even further, reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open. Along the way, he defeated Fabrice Santoro, Juan Martin del Potro and Andy Roddick. He continued to win ATP titles in subsequent years, but his most important competition was the 2014 US Open.
The year started off well in Zagreb, where Cilic won his 10th career title. The winning streak continued at the Rotterdam Open. Then there was the quarterfinals in Barcelona and the third round at the French Open. Coming to the game in the USA, Marin finally gave it his all. He beat Marcos Baghdatis, Ilya Marchenko, Kevin Anderson and Gilles Simon. Then the athlete defeated Tomas Berdych and the third racket of the world Roger Federer. It was a real breakthrough, Marin made it to the finals. As a result, the tennis player beat Kei Nishikori, receiving his first Grand Slam title. He also became the first Croatian to win it since his coach Goran Ivanisevic.
“It’s all the hard work of the last few years, especially last year. My team brought me something special, especially Goran. We work very hard, but the most important thing he brought me was the pleasure of tennis, and I think I played the best match of my life,” Cilic said.
Tournaments 2017/18
The next most successful year for Marin was 2017. He then reached the quarterfinals of the French Open for the first time in his career and thus became one of the few tennis players to reach this stage of every Grand Slam tournament. At Wimbledon, Cilic reached the final, where he was defeated by Roger Federer.
A year later, the third Grand Slam final took place. At the Australian Open, the tennis player beat Rafael Nadal to meet Federer again. He failed to become a champion, but at the subsequent Davis Cup, Cilic helped Croatia reach the final. At the moment, Marin is in 10th place in the world rankings.
One of the most famous tennis players that the Croatian land gave to the world was born on September twenty-eighth, 1988, however, at that time it was still the territory of Yugoslavia, and the future champion was born in the town of Medjugorje. Now the tennis player is sensitive to his homeland and visits it very often, but lives in the small kingdom of Monaco, in the city of Monte Carlo.
The tennis player has very impressive data, his height is currently one hundred and ninety-eight centimeters, and his weight has stopped at around eighty-nine kilograms. Such anthropometric indicators allow him to act very powerfully on the court, which he began to demonstrate from the very start of his career, which happened in 2005. It was then that the right-handed athlete announced himself to the entire tennis world. On his left side, he uses a two-handed grip, which very often gives him winning points.
The tennis player is coached by the famous specialist Ivan Tsinkus, who suits his style very well; under his leadership he managed to develop well. Over the course of his entire career, Marin managed to win more than twenty-six million dollars. In singles, he was able to reach a maximum of third position, which he achieved in January last year, and now the athlete is in eleventh place in the rankings. He also competes in doubles, but his success there is not so impressive, because the maximum he managed to achieve was only forty-ninth position.
He does not perform very consistently in Grand Slam tournaments, but at the same time he reached the final twice:
- – 2017.
- – 2018.
- And once again he managed to emerge victorious, it happened on
Number one among whom is rightfully considered the Serb. The sports history of Croatia also has its own legends - the winner of Wimbledon 2001 Goran Ivanisevic, the unfading thirty-seven-year-old Ivo Karlovich, whose record ball speed reached 251 km/h, Ivan Ljubicic. In 2005, a new star emerged - Marin Cilic, the current leader of Croatian tennis.
Biography pages
Medjugorje, Marin's homeland, is a territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina located next to the Croatian border. The village is known throughout the Christian world, for here in the 20th century the appearance of the Mother of God took place, and up to a million pilgrims flock here every year. It was not damaged at all during the civil war of the 90s, which confirms its uniqueness. In 1988, Marin was born into an ordinary family, where besides him there are three more brothers. Until the age of 13, he played tennis in his native town. The first person to believe in him was his father, Zdenko Cilic. Marin, for whom tennis had become the meaning of life, went under his patronage to Zagreb to
Goran, who had not yet completed his sports career, recognized talent in the tall, purposeful guy and later entrusted him to his former coach Bob Brett. Since then, life has inextricably linked two outstanding athletes, who, since 2013, have switched to full-fledged cooperation between coach and student. The talented Marin became the former first racket among juniors in 2005, winning the youth Roland Garros. And three years later he won the first ATP title, declaring himself loudly.
Doping scandal
In addition to the injuries that the newcomer suffered, Marin Cilic became the hero of a doping scandal in 2013. By this time, he had just come under the coaching wing of Ivanisevic and received a disqualification for 9 months. According to his version, he purchased glucose tablets from a pharmacy, which contained the prohibited niketamide, which stimulates the nervous system. To many athletes, including those who have an extremely negative attitude towards the use of prohibited drugs, the decision of the tennis authorities seemed too lenient. But even after an appeal was filed, it was revised in favor of reducing the period of disqualification to four months.
Cilic used this time to train in Ivanisevic's homeland, strengthening his physical abilities and learning new elements of the game. Goran leads the team in aces in a single season (1,477), which has ensured that Marin has strengthened his main weapon, the serve. He was preparing to start the 2014 season in uniform.
Major victories
The Croatian athlete has 14 victories in ATP tournaments (singles), but the real triumph happened after returning to the big sport from disqualification in 2014. Being able to do literally everything on the court, when meeting with famous players, Marin Cilic lost confidence and lost in decisive matches . Nine times he had the opportunity to play in the finals of serious tournaments, where he always lacked a little luck. In the 2014 US Open, he started from the 14th line of the ranking, not being considered in the forecasts as a rival to the ageless Federer, the dominant Djokovic on the court and the ambitious Murray.
This was a special BS tournament - Cilic and Nishikori, who were not considered favorites, unexpectedly made it to the finals, leaving the top players behind. In the decisive match, Marin left no chance for the Japanese athlete. So far, the US Open is the only tournament that Marin has conquered, but he has already overcome the barrier of uncertainty in front of the leaders. He has victories over Nadal, Wawrinka, and Federer. In 2015, the Balkan earned another title in Russia at the Kremlin Cup, demonstrating a real master class for Russian athletes.
Tennis player rating: Cilic's position
Marina is currently plagued by a knee injury, but he ranks eleventh (2680 points), slightly behind Raonic (2740). The best position in the standings was in August 2015, when he confidently entered the TOP 10, taking 8th place. The most successful year was 2014, when from ninth position Marin Cilic, as the winner of the TBS, became a participant in the final tournament in London. Before him, only one Croatian tennis player had received such an honor - Ivan Ljubicic, who ended his professional career several years ago. Marin is a worthy representative of the Croatian school of tennis on the international stage.
