Sean is a worthy student of great teachers. For many years now he has been one of the strongest bodybuilders in the world. In his first “professional” year, Sean applied for Olympia and immediately finished in the top five. Then he set a kind of record, remaining in the top five for another 10 years in a row.
For some, a reference book is the Bible, for others, a Stephen King novel. Well, Ray always has a thick, serious biography of some celebrity at hand. “There’s no need to be ironic,” Sean anticipates my reaction. “Just think, is it possible to learn something by reading the adventures of superman detectives? But a story about real people is a thing! You see life as it is - without the usual literary nonsense and exaggerations. Here there is courage, and unbending heroism, will, contempt for death, and at the same time the abyss of human baseness, betrayal, cowardice... In short, there is something to think about. And most importantly, there is someone to take an example from! You think: others -you went to the end, which means you should do the same in your business! For a professional, all this is very important. In bodybuilding, in order to win, it is not enough to just be stubborn like a sheep. You need creative inclinations, sensitivity, emotionality, receptiveness of mind... And for such a person, the monotony of training is like a sharp knife. It happens that going to the gym is completely unbearable - one gets sick of the monotony and boredom. In short, in order not to break down, one must consciously cultivate in oneself an unshakable determination to win at all costs. Moreover, no one is born with a ready will. The greatness of the great lies in the fact that they understood this in time and with their own hands cultivated an iron character.
In pursuit of the highest title.
Sean is a worthy student of great teachers. For many years now he has been one of the strongest bodybuilders in the world. In his first “professional” year, Sean applied for Olympia and immediately finished in the top five. Then he set a kind of record, remaining in the top five for another 10 years in a row. At the same time, in 1994 and 1996 he rose to second place, supporting the gigantic mass of Lee Haney! However, being a prize-winner is one thing, and being a winner is quite another. If so, then it looks like it’s time for Sean to fall into hysterics - it turns out that for more than a decade he has been completely unsuccessful in attacking the main goal of his life. However, this is where we need to take an example from Ray. Look, he has not lost his fighting temperament at all and, at 33 years old, is full of lively enthusiasm. “Before every workout, I tell myself that I must, must, must, must become the best in the world! It is clear that with such an attitude you will no longer be lazy. On the contrary, you will consciously want to “squeeze out” all your conceivable resources to the maximum. there is no time for hesitation, doubts and other “leftist” thoughts." Sean shares the secrets of his psychology. "By the way, I don’t even advise amateurs to start training on “autopilot.” Like, he came, changed clothes, locked his locker with clothes and went to pull by the handles of the exercise machines... No, start with a powerful psychological “self-pumping”. Sit somewhere in the far corner and collect your thoughts. “Relive” your main goal in your head. Then throw a bridge from it to today and establish exactly how and what you need to do right now to guarantee that you are one step closer to your goal.
Remember, your brain is a computer. Offer him the correct initial data, a couple of relays will click in him, and he will give you a hurricane mood! Usually, jocks, on the contrary, disorient their own brains - they introduce erroneous information into them. For example, people in the room continue to think about problems with work or re-experience a personal failure. How can your brain figure out what is more important for you - lifting weights or solving another life difficulty? Well, if there is no absolute concentration on the matter, where will the result come from? In short, you need to take hold of the bar already “cocked”!”
Creation of a champion.
Yes, Sean professes an ascetic devotion to bodybuilding, but this does not mean that his horizons are limited to the walls of the gym. Sean has surprisingly varied interests. Firstly, he is passionate about history and politics, and is very passionate about what is happening in the world. Sean subscribes to three thick daily newspapers and watches serious news television programs every night. At the same time, he is also aware of the latest news in pop culture and cinema. By the way, Sean’s musical tastes are very peculiar. For example, in his audio library “Sex Pistols” easily coexists with Natalie Cole and Andrea Bocelli.
Sean's personal life is not going well yet. He is at an age when superficial relationships are no longer needed, but serious ones haven’t worked out for him yet. You can guess the reason: every girl expects to be the only love in Sean’s heart, but when it turns out that another love lives there - for bodybuilding, then... Most recently, Sean was left by the girl whom he introduced to everyone as his future wife. Sean doesn’t hold a grudge against her: “Firstly, I’m constantly on the road. Secondly, I eat, train and sleep strictly by the hour. Thirdly, when I start preparing for the next Olympia, everything else simply ceases to exist for me - no discos, nightclubs, trips out of town, etc. Here, any girl’s patience will run out. In short, I understand everything, but it’s still a pity..."
It is believed that Sean was born too late. In the “era of Arnold” he would have been destined for a place among the “Olympian” gods, whose names still sound like an unfading legend today. A subtle sense of proportion, high harmony of proportions, artistry and conscious devotion to the high ideals of our sport - all this, indeed, makes Sean similar to the “stars” of the 60s, for whom weight was never and could not be an end in itself. Then, as you know, other times and other idols came. “Monsters” firmly established themselves on the Olympia podium, as if straight from the pages of horror comics. In such an environment, Sean, with his stoic adherence to the same competition weight of 96 kg, truly seemed like a neophyte hopelessly behind the times.
One of the great Greek orators, a staunch opponent of Carthage, which enslaved his homeland, always ended his every speech, be it about new taxes or the problems of city sewerage, with the words: “...Carthage must be destroyed!” In the end, he “got” his compatriots, who gathered the strength to actually destroy Carthage. Sean has a similar role. In each of his interviews, he does not miss the chance to mock the newfangled ideal of extreme mass. At the same time, he does not choose expressions, just like Muhammad Ali once did. Here's just one quote. “The Olympia podium is not a medieval circus, where the audience was entertained by showing freaks. The judges were simply crazy! Who does Yate represent in our sport? Just a pitiful handful of bodybuilders who managed to grow to 190 cm. Well, behind me is the bulk of the musclemen with with an average height of 172 cm and a starting weight of 68-70 kg. Whose victory is more significant and important? It’s clear that it’s mine! Fans will see with their own eyes what can be achieved in our sport with mediocre genetics! However, I am regularly “pushed” for the sake of the guys , who weighed a stolnik already at the age of 17. I strongly disagree! The highest meaning of bodybuilding is that it is capable of overturning any genetic barriers. True, for this you need to show extraordinary willpower and character. In this sense, “Olympia” should represent us "The highest manifestations of the human spirit. What's the point of bringing all these "broilers" to the front ranks!?"
One can have different attitudes to Ray's words, in particular, many believe that the previous ideals of symmetry and proportions artificially limit the spirit of a bodybuilder. In life, a bodybuilder is an explorer of unknown, hidden physiological spaces of a person. He's like an astronaut in space. No one can say for sure what awaits him ahead. Therefore, the bodybuilder must be left with the freedom to experiment, the freedom to try and make mistakes. And if someone believes that they can reach the competition weight of 140 kg, let them try...
Ray's fans, like himself, think very differently. Like, the main thing is the proportions, and not anyhow, but those that meet our ideas about sportiness. Let's take the same Hercules, from whom everything started. He is infinitely strong, but not at all with the strength of a hulk - a powerlifter. He is faster and tougher than everyone else, he shoots a bow better than anyone, masterfully handles a spear and sword, he is a tireless swimmer, a champion wrestler, and also a hero in the field of sex. Is such an athletic ideal embodied by the clumsy modern “Olympians” weighing one and a half hundredweight?
By the way, no one here would dare throw a stone at Sean. Outside the hall, he is a swimming fan, a great volleyball player, tennis player, football player and even a rocker (he has two motorcycles). What is the philosophy of law? Look at Ray and draw your own conclusion...
Shawn Ray is the “Giant Slayer,” so nicknamed because he had the lowest height and weight among his competitors, but was still one of the best. He appeared on the podium at the Mr. Olympia tournament 13 times and was in the top five bodybuilders 6 times. The phenomenon of this athlete’s success still amazes not only fans of this sport, but also professionals.
The path to bodybuilding
Sean was born in California into a large family (he was the eighth child). At the age of 18, he prepared his body for a football tournament, but became so interested in bodybuilding that he soon began to spend more time in the gym. Already in his first year of training, he managed to take first place in youth competitions. This inspired Sean even more, and five years later he became a professional bodybuilder. He got his first contract with Joe Weider after winning the American National Championship in 1987. But even despite this, Sean did not give up other activities: he studied at college and was interested in science. Shawn Ray is an example of a well-rounded bodybuilder. He is not only a successful bodybuilder, but also an actor, writer and model. Sean starred not only for the covers of famous magazines, but even appeared in films. His book "The Shawn Raw Way" became a bestseller, which maps nutrition and training patterns. The publication has become very popular among bodybuilding enthusiasts. Many believe that Shawn Ray was worthy of the Mr. Olympia title, but never received it due to his height. The title was almost always given to taller athletes over 180 cm. However, despite his anthropometric data, Sean always terrified his competitors. He was always placed among the favorites, and he proved that success can be achieved under any conditions and with any “base”.Shawn Ray's Workout Program
Sean has developed his own training scheme, the basis of which is high intensity and maximum load on the whole body. Ray recommends that beginning athletes perform two sets of one exercise with light weights and the other two with maximum weights. Sean's entire workout is limited to 50 minutes, but the intensity put into this period of time is simply amazing. A typical Shawn Ray split looks like this: Day One:- Morning – pectoral and calf muscles;
- Evening – triceps and abs.
- Morning – quadriceps;
- Evening – thigh muscles.
- Morning – back muscles and calf muscles;
- Evening – biceps.
- Morning - shoulders;
- Evening – press.
- Rest.
- The beginning of a new cycle.
Shawn Ray- a famous bodybuilder who was called a genetic miracle, Shawn Ray was born on September 9 in Fullerton, California, USA. He turned out to be the eighth child in the family.
After Shawn Ray entered college, he began working out in the gym. Over the years of his career, Shawn Ray participated in the Mr. Olympia tournament thirteen times.
Body-building
Sean won his first victory in 1983, when he first competed at youth competitions in Los Angeles. After this victory, Shawn Ray's career rapidly went up, gaining momentum. In 1984 he received the title " Mr. Los Angeles", in 1985 he participates in a series of youth tournaments and receives titles " Mr World" and Mr. " America" And finally, in 1988, just 8 years after his first victory, he became a professional bodybuilder. Throughout his career, Shawn Ray has taken part in more than thirty famous competitions and tournaments, and only once did he fail to place in the top five.
In addition to bodybuilding, Shawn Ray was interested in boxing, basketball, and gymnastics. Sean's interests included various charitable contributions and activities.
It is worth noting that Shawn Ray was once caught using illegal drugs. It happened at the tournament " Arnold Classic", the organizers of which decided to conduct a doping test. However, this did not stop Sean from winning this tournament the following year, having successfully passed the doping tests.
One of the greatest achievements of bodybuilder Shawn Ray was the fact that out of thirteen appearances at the tournament, he placed in the top five twelve times.
In 2001, the athlete left the big sport, but bodybuilding always remained in his area of interest. In addition to his new work, Shawn Ray wrote several books and tried his acting skills in several films, one of which was autobiographical.
After finishing his sports career, Shawn Ray began to arrange his family life. After his marriage, he became the father of two children. Now Sean is improving his culinary skills in Japanese cuisine, listening to the music of Mary Carey, Aerosmith, Andrei Bocelli, playing basketball and tennis.
Shawn Ray, nicknamed by fans as a genetic miracle (for the complete absence of weak muscles on his body), a 13-time participant in the Mr. Olympia tournament, known as the “Giant Killer,” was born on September 9, 1965 in Fullerton (California, USA).
Ray first appeared on the podium in 1983 at a youth competition in Los Angeles. Of course, victory literally fell into his hands. And just five years later (in 1988), Sean began his professional career as a bodybuilder and during all the time he participated in competitions (and there are more than 30 of them), he only once failed to make it into the top 5 finalists. However, the athlete’s interests were not limited to bodybuilding. He has appeared in six films: "Lifestyles of the Fit & Famous", "Final Countdown", "Inside & Out-Behind the Muscle", "To The Extreme", "Best of Shawn Ray" and "Fitness After 40". The last two are autobiographical.
Ray is mentioned in the Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding (authored by Bill Dobbins and Arnold Schwarzenegger). Sean has become quite a popular author himself. In his book "The Shawn Ray Way" he actually collected all his life experiences and presented them in recommendations on how to become a bodybuilder. Ray often appeared on the cover of Flex magazine (perhaps more often than any other bodybuilder), but international bodybuilding and fitness publications published articles about the bodybuilder with no less enthusiasm.
Incredibly charming and artistic, Sean co-hosted the 2006 and 2007 Mr. Olympia competitions in Las Vegas. But a beautiful body and high charisma are not the main advantages of an athlete. Throughout his life, Sean has repeatedly shown himself to be not only a talented and purposeful, but also a very kind person - he organized a one-of-a-kind donation fund for professional bodybuilders. With the help of his “catwalk colleagues,” in just two years he managed to raise and donate more than $55,000 to the Children’s Hospital of Orange County.
Of course, against the backdrop of numerous successes, there were some falls - Sean was the first professional bodybuilder to be disqualified from the Arnold Classic competition for doping. True, the very next year he “rehabilitated himself” and took 1st place.
But the main goal - the Mr. Olympia title - eluded Shawn Ray throughout his career. The athlete was in the top five 12 times - a kind of record that has not been broken by anyone to this day. During the entire competition, Sean managed to beat each of the competitors at least once. The only exceptions were 8-time Mr. Olympia Lee Haney and 6-time Mr. Olympia Dorian Yates. In 2007, Shawn Ray was inducted into the IFBB Professional Bodybuilding Hall of Fame.
Sean retired from competition in 2001 and now works for GENr8 Nutrition. He also did not give up writing - Sean’s articles are published monthly in the “Muscular Development” magazine in the “Industry Inside” column.
Sean’s personal life did not work out for a long time, even at a time when the athlete was already ripe for a serious relationship. His girls were tired of competing with their love of bodybuilding. However, although Ray was upset, he understood them perfectly, admitting that he practically lives by the hour, and when starting to prepare for the next Olympia, he simply forgets about everything else. And only after the end of his career, in 2003, Sean got married and already in 2005 (August 10) became a happy father. The daughter was named Asia Coin. The couple decided not to stop there, and on August 30, 2008, Sean's wife (Christie) gave birth to their second daughter, Bella Blue.
Many believed that Sean should have been born earlier. The harmony of proportions and forms, a subtle sense of proportion and the artistry of the athlete were more consistent with the criteria of the 60s. Now there are different times and different idols, for many of whom mass becomes almost an end in itself. Compared to them, Sean (with a competition weight of 96 kg), indeed, often looked like a neophyte. However, he himself never tires of ironizing over the “fashion for extreme weight.” “The Olympia podium is not a medieval circus, where the audience was entertained by showing freaks. What's the point of bringing all these "broilers" to the front ranks!?" - this is just one of Sean's statements about modern bodybuilding criteria.
Sean has always been a very versatile person, despite his absolutely fanatical love for bodybuilding. His interests include boxing, football, basketball, gymnastics, tennis, music (especially Andrea Bocelli, Mariah Carey, Aerosmith and Toni Braxton) - the list goes on and on. Sean is partial to Japanese cuisine, white chocolate and carrot cake. From films he prefers "Braveheart", from cars - Lamborghini Diablo. However, the athlete’s literary tastes are distinguished by the greatest originality - instead of fiction or classic works of fiction, there is always a biography of a celebrity on his desk. According to Sean himself, made-up facts cannot teach anything. And stories about people who really lived allow you to see life as it is, without embellishment or exaggeration. There is something to think about and someone to take an example from.

Amazingly beautiful physique. IMHO, one of the best in the history of bodybuilding. |

The only thing is that there are dozens of “best”. Although, undeniably, worthy. By the way, what is it for with "Arnold"? |

If my memory serves me correctly, there was a story with ephedrine. In Flex they wrote something, they say, Sean made an excuse by saying that he was being treated for a runny nose and did not know anything about ephedrine. Like children, honestly. :))) |
|

That means he gave a couple of ephedrine enemas for a runny nose... I see. |
|

I actually read that Sean got caught on stanozolol back then. |

What are you saying? Who will write such words in flex? And who is treated with stanozolol for a runny nose? :) Okay, so I’ll go to the dacha, dig up old magazines, and give an exact quote. |

Of course, Vader's flex won't write something like that. :-) I read the info on steroid.ru |

The best of the best. Twice uncrowned Mr. O. In 1994 and 1996. Moreover, in 1994, Yates was clearly thrust into first place. A guy with simply unique genetics has never existed in our sport and never will. And the free compositions were always simply amazing. |

Main loser!!! Maybe he was cooler than Dorika, but he didn’t have the titles!!! Yats is an icon of the 90s. |

Coolman, but he has never been cooler, especially Dorian. Flex's dumbbell weighed more, that says it all. |

Shawn Ray is an example of symmetry and proportions, a classic of bodybuilding. And no Dorians, Colemans, etc. stood next to him in proportions and symmetry. Flex, of course, is also very good, but still the balance of muscle mass is on Shawn Ray’s side. |

Don't argue. The judges just want to see progress and annual changes for the better. But Ray just lost kg. 8 throw it on and go out and show everyone where the crayfish spend the winter. It’s for his “small-caliber ideals of proportions” that he didn’t get Sandow! And then he started to gravitate towards Vader... in short, everything is as always. The history of losers repeats itself. |

“The judges just want to see progress and yearly changes for the better.” Ppt... Where do you see changes for the better in BB???? You have progress and changes for the better - is it an increase in body weight, by deteriorating proportions and relief???? If Ray had gained those 8 kg, maybe he would have become the winner, but then no one would have admired his drop-dead beautiful body. |
|
+3 -1 | |
RAY, for your information, was ready to eat soil from a flower pot just to win... otherwise, like, if he had scored... maybe he would have... but then no one would have admired... complete nonsense! Couldn't show extreme...go swing a shovel - outsider! Everything is as simple as five cents. |
Shawn Ray biography
(Shawn Ray) was born on September 9, 1965 in Fullerton, California, USA. His family was large, and he was the 8th child in it. Sean may be a black athlete, but his face looks more like a light-skinned person. This is all because his mother was half Puerto Rican. Despite the fact that he loved sports since childhood, until the age of 18 the guy had no idea what bodybuilding was. During college, he started going to the gym to gain some weight because he played American football. At that time, his weight was no more than 75 kilograms, and he understood that this was not enough for football. Sean planned to gain the required amount of weight in six months, but noticed that he completed his program in just a few weeks. This inspired the guy. It is worth noting that Ray never had super genetics, and he was not able to progress as quickly as other athletes. In any case, he needed a qualified trainer.Photos by Shawn Ray
Shawn Ray Performance History
One day, John Brown, a famous bodybuilder at that time, twice winner of the title “Mr. Universe,” visited his gym. Of course, this athlete had enormous respect and authority. No matter how strange it may sound, this 120-kilogram giant himself spoke to young Ray and asked him what tournament to prepare for. Sean froze in place. This prompted the young athlete to compete in his first Orange Coast Championship tournament, where he took second place and received a prize for best posing. Next, the young man submits an application and goes to the California Gold Cup podium, where he wins in the middleweight category. Well, everything was already clear, and Sean decided that he would be a professional bodybuilder.

Brown began to train Sean, after which the young bodybuilder’s career began to climb the vertical ladder. He conquered tournament after tournament and already in 1984 he won the titles of “Mr. Los Angeles” among juniors and “Mr. California”. The following year, the athlete won among juniors “Mr. Orange County,” “Mr. America,” and “Mr. World” without any problems.
Against the backdrop of such incredible victories, Sean continued to study at college, where he studied the science of his own business. However, Ray lost once in the Junior National Championship (future football coach), finishing second in 1986. Recalling this episode, Sean says the following words: “It was annoying, and I drew conclusions. From now on, I never lost to this guy again.”
In 1987, Sean won the National Championship on his first attempt, ahead of such eminent athletes as Phil Hill, Eddie Robinson, Vince Taylor and Troy Zucolotto. Despite the fact that Ray still competed in the middle weight category, he even became the winner in the overall competition. offered the guy a contract that provided the young athlete with 10 thousand dollars a month. This allowed him to live separately from his parents. And again, the athlete did not give up his studies, even though his hobby had already turned into a successful career.
Having received a professional card, many did not promise a great future for Ray, since he was actually a small, compact bodybuilder. But no matter how. The first professional tournament “Night of Champions” in 1988 was significant for the champion. Despite the 4th place, he qualifies for "". Unfortunately, Olympia did not bring great results - 13th place. But he gained invaluable experience and even greater motivation. He felt this atmosphere and realized that the most important thing was yet to come.
In 1990, even the top athletes of those years began to reckon with Ray. Despite the fact that he was disqualified from the Arnold Classic, where he failed a doping test, he finished third at the Olympia, and the following year won the same Arnold Classic.
At the main bodybuilding tournament “Mr. Olympia”, Sean never won the coveted victory, but he tried to compete there 13 times. From 1990 to 2001, he performed on this show without fail. Moreover, he always took no lower than 5th place. In 1994 he finished second, behind Dorian Yatz, and in 1996 he again became second, without defeating the same athlete. Throughout his time at Olympia, Sean managed to beat each of his opponents at least once, with the exception of. “I had a real chance of winning in 1994. I was in great shape, and Dorian was just coming off rehabilitation from a hand injury. Many experts believed that then the victory should be mine, but fashion had already arrived beyond the masses. Broilers were valued more than aesthetic forms,” - this is what the champion himself said, even somewhat harshly.
Ray retired from bodybuilding in 2001. But he is still an active participant in the modern bodybuilding machine. He repeatedly hosted Mr. Olympia, as he had amazing diction, artistry and the ability to speak beautifully. He is involved in charitable foundations, has his own business, is a regular editor of columns in many sports magazines, appears in many films, has written more than one book on bodybuilding, and still has contracts with manufacturers of sporting goods.
Shawn Ray now
Despite the fact that Sean was somewhat disillusioned with bodybuilding due to subjective judging, he is considered the “Giant Smasher”. His body had practically no lagging muscle groups, despite this he did not have huge muscle mass, paying attention to the aesthetic features of his build. He harshly criticized the new judging fashion, when huge guys win, bringing one and a half hundredweight of awkward muscles to the podium. He protested as a competitive athlete and now believes that bodybuilding has not gone exactly the way it should have gone. Without winning a single Olympia, he was still inducted into the IFBB World Bodybuilding Hall of Fame.
For a long time, the very successful Sean could not improve his personal life, since all his girlfriends ran away from him because of his jealousy of bodybuilding. Indeed, the athlete himself comments that he lived like a robot. Eating, sleeping, training and everything else exclusively according to the schedule. But after he stopped performing in 2003, he married Christie and on August 10, 2005 his first daughter, Asia Monet, was born. On August 30, 2008, his second daughter, Bella Blue, is born. Shawn Ray is enjoying life now, he still keeps himself in excellent physical shape.
