A tennis court is a special area designed for training and competitions in this exciting sport. They are not arranged arbitrarily - the size of the tennis court is organized depending on the standard requirements that apply to these sites.
Court dimensions
The court sizes that are common today depend on the type of future competitions held there - for singles or doubles. The difference between the sizes of these two courts is expressed in the difference in the width of the court.
For length, the following tennis court dimensions are established - 23.78 m. For width – 10.97m tennis doubles, 23.78m singles. Both of these areas vary in width to accommodate the optimal number of actively moving participants.
Court grid and court markings
The tennis court is divided in the middle by a net through which the ball passes. As a result of the division, the length of the court in each half is 11.89 meters. The net itself is fixed to posts; they are placed outside the court to reduce the likelihood of injury to players. In this case, the racks are slightly higher than the highest point of the nets.
There are service lines on each half of the court, they are located parallel to the net and the drawn back lines. The total distance between them is 12.8 m, that is, 6.4 m from the grid on each side. The center line is drawn perpendicular to the net, it begins and ends at the marking of the service lines. The service lines are marked from lines drawn parallel to the outer court markings. Thanks to this marking, a play corridor is created. Its width - 1.37 m - is the same for all types of courts - both doubles and singles.
Play space
The actual dimensions of a tennis court are slightly larger than the space limited by the extreme marking lines - at the back and on the sides. It is the actual size of the court that will determine the location of the ball during the competition. For the races of participants in competitions and training, the distance is set at 6.4 m from the back line of the court and 3.66 m from the side line. Similar sizes are accepted at world-class competitions.
At national and regional championships, it is possible to hold the tournament on a court with a reduced racing area, but not less than 3.66 m from the side markings and 5.48 m from the back. For indoor (indoor) courts there is also a requirement for the ceiling height - not lower than 9.14 m.
For successful and wealthy people, dachas have long ceased to be small houses with a minimum of conditions, and in suburban areas you can increasingly find swimming pools, saunas and wine cellars.
If you prefer active recreation and are a fan of playing tennis, you might want to think about building your own court in a suburban area. It should be admitted that the construction of tennis courts is very expensive, but the result of the effort and finances spent will be the opportunity to enjoy your favorite game and communication at any convenient time.
When starting a task such as designing tennis courts, you should make sure that there is free space of the required size on your site.
- The main requirement is to place the short side of the court from east to west. This is necessary so that during the game the sun does not blind the players' eyes.
- Officially recognized by the International Tennis Federation are the following dimensions of the tennis court: the width of the court is 10.97 m, and the length, respectively, is 23.77 m. Due to the runs and side corridors, the total dimensions of the court will be between 18.29 and 36.57 m (area 668 sq. m).
- There are some types of courts that require a smaller area to build. Thus, the required court dimensions for singles tennis are 23.8 x 8.2 m.
- The general dimensions of tennis courts for beginners and children will be 16x32 m and 17x34 m respectively.
But if you have already planned such a serious construction, experts advise building a full-fledged tennis court right away, since remodeling an already built one will not be cheap.
Choosing coverage
The surface is the most basic and expensive part of the court. Different types of coatings differ significantly in characteristics. When choosing a surface for tennis courts, you need to evaluate each of them according to the following criteria:
- comfort,
- durability,
- cost and operating costs.
Clay courts
The most inexpensive and least traumatic coating is considered to be a ground covering.
- Clay courts require the least amount of time to build, and their cost is three to four times less than any synthetic surface.
- Playing on clay puts less strain on the legs and spine.
- But maintaining a tennis court with such a coating will require significant effort and expense.
They must be thoroughly cleaned of leaves and debris, watered in hot weather, and renewed every spring. To do this, at the beginning of the season you will need from 2 to 5 tons of tennis player (a mixture of clay, stone chips and special additives). To create a court of standard sizes, up to 40 tons of this mixture are required; after compaction, the height of the coating should be at least four centimeters.
Grass court
The court can be covered with grass, both natural and artificial.
- Natural grass requires regular care: cutting and watering.
- Artificial grass is made up of multiple propylene fibers that are woven into a latex backing.
A certain amount of sand is poured on top, depending on the length of the fiber. As a base for such a coating, a layer of fine gravel or a concrete surface is required.
The rigidity of this coating, and, accordingly, the rebound speed of the ball can be adjusted by the degree of moisture in the fibers. Like clay courts, grass courts also need regular sanding.
Coverings for hard courts
Acrylic self-leveling coatings for hard tennis courts have become very popular today. Many famous tennis tournaments take place on hard courts.
A significant advantage of this coating is its durability: hard, if applied correctly, can last for decades. There is virtually no maintenance required for an acrylic tennis court.
To build a court with an acrylic surface, the site must first be poured with concrete or covered with asphalt. Depending on the number of layers of fill, the court will have different degrees of rigidity. A four-layer fill is considered the minimum, but seven or more layers make the site safe. Construction of courts with acrylic coating is the most expensive and takes a long time. Maintenance of a tennis court with acrylic coating is the easiest and simplest among all of the above.
Plastic covering
Another material for artificial court surfaces is plastic. It is produced in the form of small blocks and mounted using special fasteners. Same as acrylic, plastic
- placed on a solid base,
- easy to care for
- does not require additional costs during operation.
When choosing plastic, be sure to check the warranty from the manufacturer. Blocks made from low-quality materials can become deformed due to temperature changes, rendering your court completely unusable.
To make tennis court maintenance easier, it is necessary to provide drainage. To do this, the platform should be placed at an angle in width.
Additional items
To turn the finished site into a real tennis court, you will need a few more details.
This is what the court should look like.
From the schematic picture of the court it is clear that we will also need a net, fencing, and lamps to illuminate the tennis court.
The mesh for dividing the site should be made of nylon, the optimal dimensions of the fabric are: width - 12.8 m, height - 1.06 m. To fix the mesh, it is advisable to insert a metal cable into the upper edge.
Tennis court fencing has several functional purposes. It prevents balls from flying out of the court, restrains gusts of wind that blow out the soil, and against the background of the fence the trajectory of the ball is better visible.
To build a fence you will need a chain-link mesh and metal or wooden posts up to 4 meters long. The pillars are concreted to a depth of 1 m and covered with mesh. To further isolate the court, you can plant climbing plants along the fence.
If you are building a tennis court with your own hands, the data from the following picture will help you in applying the markings.
To apply lines, you can use markings made of perforated white polyvinyl chloride, which are rolled into the coating. A cheaper option would be regular enamel white paint.
It should be remembered that the width of the end lines should be 10 cm, and the rest - 5 cm. We transfer the marking lines from the picture to the court, and the marking of the tennis court is ready.
If you can find time to play tennis mainly in the evening, you should take care of the lighting. Optimal lighting of a tennis court can be achieved by installing four to eight lamps at a height of 5-6 m, depending on their power.
For playing tennis it is called a court. It has a rectangular shape with certain parameters. The dimensions depend on its purpose. According to the rules, the game can be played in pairs or singles. In the first case, 2 teams of two people each participate, and in a single game the match is played one on one. In this regard, the parameters of the sports ground vary. For doubles, the dimensions of the tennis court in meters are taken to be 23.77 x 10.97 m, for singles - 23.77 x 8.23 m, including the boundary lines that are part of the playing field. According to the rules, a ball that hits the marking line (except for its outer edge) is counted.
The short side of the court rectangle is limited by the back line (10 cm wide), the long side by the side line (5 cm). The middle of the playing field is a grid extending beyond its boundaries by 914 mm in both directions. Service zones are marked by internal marking lines: two service lines (parallel to the back lines) and a central service line (parallel to the side lines). The first two are marked at a distance of 640 cm from the net within the singles court, and the center line is located between them and exactly in the middle of the court. Here are the dimensions of the tennis court directly around the perimeter of the playing area without taking into account the races.
Outside the playing field, along the outer edge of the boundary lines, there is additional space for easy movement of players, called runs. Their width depends on the level of competitions that will be held on this field. For international games, the width of the back run is taken to be from 6.40 to 8.20 m, and the side run - within 3.66-4.57 m. For amateur competitions: back run - 5.49 m, side run - 3.05 of a tennis court with races is the sum of the parameters of the main field, taking into account the width of the races.
The surface of a tennis court can be grass, dirt, carpet, or with a synthetic top layer based on concrete or asphalt. The surface of the playing field, as well as the size of the tennis court, is of great importance and has a significant impact on the quality of the game. Particular attention is paid to this issue when organizing professional competitions. For example, the prestigious Wimbledon tournament is held on grass courts. This type of surface is characterized by the fastest and at the same time the lowest rebound of the ball compared to others. The French Open, one of the four Grand Slam tournaments along with Wimbledon, takes place in Paris at the famous Roland Garros tennis arena, which uses a clay playing surface. . This surface provides the highest bounce of the ball, and the pace of play on a clay court is considered the slowest with long rallies.
The ancestor of modern tennis is real tennis, which is considered one of the oldest and appeared several centuries ago in England as royal entertainment. Real tennis still exists today, but is played indoors and has significant differences from the modern form of this game. The tennis court measures 29 x 9.8 m and the ball used in the game is made of cork, as opposed to the standard rubber ball used in lawn tennis.
Tennis is gaining more and more popularity. It is played by professional and amateur athletes, adults and children. What size should a tennis court be? This is what we will talk about.
What is a tennis court?
Playing tennis requires a fairly large court. Unfortunately, the majority of amateur gardeners do not have the opportunity to build a court on their dacha plot.
The area of 600 m2 does not allow for a full-fledged tennis court even for amateur players.
But there is a way out. Tennis is a collective game. It involves a minimum of 2 players. Therefore, using the territory adjacent to the garden partnership, you can equip an excellent tennis court, which will allow all members of the team to spend their leisure time in an organized manner.
What should be the dimensions of a tennis court in meters? The playing area is a flat area measuring 18 by 36 meters, or 648 m2.
Arrangement of a tennis court
To build a court you will need:
- sketch of a tennis court;
- availability of a suitable location;
- drainage pipes;
- sand, clay, fertile soil, crushed stone, artificial lawn grass;
- tennis net, posts for fastening it;
- possibility of installing wind protection;
- rollers for compacting and leveling soil.
In the selected area, soil leveling is carried out. The slope of the site should be no more than 1 degree. Drainage pipes are laid along the perimeter and diagonally to ensure water flow if the surface is soil or grass. When installing hard flooring (concrete or asphalt), drainage should not be installed diagonally.
The prepared site is covered with a layer of crushed stone, which is leveled with a roller. Next, pour a layer of sand, which is also compacted. An earthen mixture consisting of sand, clay and fertile soil is poured on top of this pillow. The proportions should be the same. The soil is leveled, its level is checked with a construction compass, then everything is compacted and watered for shrinkage. The base dries for 3 days. After this, preliminary marking of the site is done. At its base, posts for the net and supports for wind protection are installed. Artificial lawn grass turf is laid on the ground.
Tennis court dimensions
Tennis field markings are applied to the artificial turf. The court is made for doubles and singles play. Each type is characterized by its own court size.
In order to save building material and space, markings for different types of games are made on one field. What size should a tennis court be? The standard is 18 by 36 meters. But when the fields for doubles and singles are combined, it is worth noting their main difference - the field for singles is smaller in width.
Court dimensions in doubles:
Tennis court dimensions in singles:
- central dividing line - 4.165 m;
- field width - 8.23 m.
All other court size indicators are the same as in doubles.
Tennis court maintenance
Features of court care depend on its surface. The most complex manipulations require a primer coating. After each game it needs to be leveled, watered, and restoration work carried out after the winter period.
Hard surface courts (concrete, asphalt, wood, plastic) only need to be cleaned after rain and autumn leaves. Artificial grass fields require the least effort. They only need to be cleared of autumn leaves with a rake, while the water leaves through the drainage.
A court is an area designed for playing tennis. Such a platform has a special coating, special markings and standard dimensions. By the way, you can buy branded tennis court surfaces at Lentus. The company offers several successful options, so you can easily choose the right one for yourself. But what are the dimensions of the court?
The court intended for playing in pairs differs in size from the court intended for playing alone. The difference is due to the convenience requirements for a different number of players. The width of the court for one person is 8.23 m, for two people it is 10.97 m. The length for both cases is 23.78 m.
The court, intended for playing tennis, is divided into two equal parts using a net. 11.89 m - this is exactly the length of each part. To fix the mesh, special racks are provided. Each of them is located at a distance of 0.914 m from the boundaries of the court. The posts are higher than the net (1.07 and 0.914 m, respectively). Deviations from standard sizes are unacceptable.
Two feed circuits are drawn parallel to the mesh contour, as well as to the rear contours. 12.8 m is the distance between these contours. The main contour runs perpendicular to these contours. This circuit begins at the supply circuits. That's where it ends. The main contour does not extend beyond the feed contours. The feed contours do not reach the outer edge of the playing field. They only touch the parallel outer edges of the contours. The width of the corridor is equal for both one-person play and two-person play. The actual dimensions of the court, which is intended for playing tennis, slightly exceed the area limited by the rear and side contours.
