2014, August 12, Cardiff City- Real Madrid, which won its tenth European Cup in May thanks to two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, one in each half, beat Europa League winners Sevilla in the Welsh capital. Thus, the collection of the “royal club” was replenished with the second UEFA Super Cup.
UEFA Super Cup. Story.
The UEFA Super Cup is the official football tournament that opens the European season and consists of one match in which the winners of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League of the previous season meet. Since the draw is held at the end of August, before the start of the autumn-spring football season, at the end of the summer transfer window, the draw usually involves the updated squads of the winning teams of previous tournaments.
The idea of the UEFA Super Cup was born in Holland precisely when the clubs of this country, especially Ajax, terrified the whole of Europe. The founder of the tournament was Anton Witkamp, a reporter for the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.
Witkamp proposed holding a new tournament for the best teams in Europe, which would be another test for Amsterdam's Ajax. The Dutchman once said the following about the UEFA Super Cup: "I came up with this to once again praise Johan Cruyff and his Ajax. It was our time, because everyone was delighted with total football."
At that time, Feyenoord and Ajax reached the European Cup finals four times and won the prestigious trophy three times. This period was considered the "golden era" of Dutch football; Dutch clubs were considered the strongest in Europe.
When Witkamp shared his idea with Ajax president Jaap van Pragh, he greeted the proposal with enthusiasm, and preparations for the tournament soon began under the patronage of Witkamp's newspaper. But the current UEFA president, Artemio Franchi, refused to give them official support for the tournament due to a one-year disqualification from Ajax's rival, Rangers, due to inappropriate behavior by fans of the club from Glasgow.
Since Rangers were celebrating their centenary, it was decided to play for the title of the strongest in an unofficial confrontation. As a result, the first Super Cup took place in 1972, it was financed by De Telegraaf, and UEFA never recognized it. Based on the sum of the two matches played at home and away, Ajax won with a score of 6:3.
A year later, UEFA agreed to officially recognize the Super Cup and stage a match between Milan and Ajax, who had once again won the European Cup. Milan was able to beat Ajax 1:0 in the first match, but lost in the return match with a score of 0:6.
The 1974 Super Cup did not take place due to disagreements about the timing between West German Bayern Munich and Magdeburg from the GDR.
The Super Bowl began to be held continuously in 1975. The exception was 1981, when Liverpool did not find time to meet with Dynamo Tbilisi, and in 1984, the dispute between the English team and Juventus was resolved by just one meeting, in which the British lost.
In 1985, Liverpool met Juventus in the European Cup final at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels and again lost to the Turin side. Meanwhile, in the stands, a clash between fans occurred, leading to death, known as the Heysel tragedy. As a result, English teams were banned for five years from all UEFA competitions, including Juventus' rivals, Cup Winners' Cup winners Everton. The 1985 Super Bowl was cancelled.
The following year, 1986, the format of the Super Bowl again had to be hastily changed. Dynamo Kyiv and Steaua were unable to agree on holding matches in the USSR and Romania, and the only match had to be played on a neutral field. This is how the Stade Louis II in Monaco became the venue for the Super Cup for the first time.
In 1991, the outcome of the confrontation was again decided by one match - Manchester United hosted Red Star at the home arena of Old Trafford, as the political situation in Belgrade was considered unstable, and the match in Yugoslavia was decided to be cancelled.
In 1998, UEFA, taking into account the emerging problems, approved a new tournament format: one match in a neutral arena. The arena was the Stade Louis II.
In Monaco, the UEFA Super Cup was played from 1998 to 2012, and at the same time a new European Cup season was opened. Since 1999, when the last edition of the Cup Winners' Cup took place, the trophy has been contested by the winners of the Champions League and the UEFA Cup (since 2010, the UEFA Europa League), and since 2013, matches for the UEFA Super Cup have been held in different cities.
UEFA Super Cup. Trophy.
The current Super Cup was first awarded to Sevilla in 2006. Until then, the Super Cup had been the smallest European trophy for a long time. He weighed only 5 kilograms with a height of 42.5 centimeters. For comparison, the Champions League Cup weighs 8 kg, and the Europa League Cup weighs 15 kg.
A modern super cup, with a height of 58 centimeters, weighs 12.2 kilograms.
The new trophy retains key design elements of its predecessor, designed in Bertoni's Milan workshop. The classic bowl flows smoothly into an onyx base, made in the shape of a twisted skein of wool, and two side handles allow you to comfortably hold the goblet.
The Super Cup is a moving prize. In exchange for the transferable prize, a copy of it will be awarded forever. If any club wins a rolling prize 3 times in a row or 5 times in total, the prize remains in that club forever. Milan first received it for eternal storage in 2007 after defeating Sevilla (3:1).

The UEFA Super Cup is a single-match European club football tournament played by the winners of the previous season's Champions League and Europa League. This cup kicks off the new European season, which is held in the “autumn-spring” format. This year, the English Manchester United and Real Madrid will open the new European club season.
Where and when will the UEFA Super Cup be held in 2017?
In 2016, UEFA decided to host the UEFA Super Cup in Macedonia, a country that had not previously hosted decisive matches in European club tournaments of this level.
The Philip II of Macedon Stadium was chosen as the venue for the 2017 UEFA Super Cup. This arena previously hosted 5 matches of the final stage of the European Women's Under-19 Championship.
Philip II of Macedon was reopened after renovation in 2009 and now has a capacity of 33,460 spectators.
Previously, the stadium was called “Gladski”, but after reconstruction it was named in honor of the father of Alexander the Great, famous throughout Europe.
Participants of the UEFA Super Cup 2017
In order to compete for the UEFA Super Cup, Real Madrid and Man United had to overcome a difficult path. If Manchester United had less eminent opponents in the Europa League, then Los Blancos, in the Champions League, had to compete with many European giants in order to ultimately reach the Champions League final and win there.
Let us remind you that Manchester received a ticket to the UEFA Super Cup final thanks to a victory over Ajax with a score of 2:0. In turn, Real defeated Turin's Juventus 4:1, becoming the 12-time winner of the Champions League.
Today, the date and location of the UEFA Super Cup 2018 final are already known. The Union of European Football Associations has established that the final of the 43rd edition of the tournament will be held in the city of Tallinn (Estonia) at the Lilleküla stadium. August 15, 2018. The meeting is scheduled to start at 22:00 Moscow time. For Estonia, this will be the first final of such a major competition, in which the winner of the Champions League and Europa League of the 2017/18 season will take part.
8 million euros in prize money will be drawn between the participants of the Super Cup: the winner will receive € 5 million and the losing side will receive € 3 million.
Stadium A Le Coq Arena
- Opened: 2001
- Architect: Jaldo Oravas
- Capacity: 15,000
"A. Le Coq Arena, also known as Lilleküla, is the largest and most modern stadium in the Baltic countries. Its capacity is 10,500 people, but during concerts it can accommodate up to 25,000 spectators at the same time (not only football matches are held in this arena, but also various concerts and events).
In 2016, the reconstruction of Lylleküla began in order to increase its capacity for the 2018 UEFA Super Cup. During the reconstruction, the main entrance building, the roof, and the number of seats in the stands were increased. The stadium now seats 15,000 people. Now the local football club "Flora" plays its home matches on it.
Although the A Le Coq Arena has been expanded to 15,000 seats, it will be the smallest stadium in history to host a UEFA Super Cup game.
Who will play in the UEFA Super Cup final?
This cup will open the new European Cup season. As mentioned above, the winners of the Champions League - Real Madrid and the Champions League - Atletico Madrid will play in it.
Thus, in the match for the Super Cup, two giants of Spanish football will compete, the head-to-head confrontations are called the “Madrid Derby”. Over the past 5 years, the teams have played each other twice in the Champions League final, and in both cases the “royal” club won.
Let us recall that last year the winner of the UEFA Super Cup was Real Madrid. Then Zinedine Zidane's team defeated Jose Mourinho's Manchester United with a score of 2:1 in regular time.
Traditions are changing. Previously, Real was a predatory, dangerous opponent for Atlético and put the squeeze on their opponents in decisive matches, even if things weren’t going well. This time, the “creamy” players themselves found themselves in the role of a victim. And everything went wrong from the very first seconds. Not even a minute had passed before Atlético opened the scoring. It took Real some time to come to their senses and turn the tide of the game, taking the initiative into their own hands. This allowed us to win back by the end of the half hour and continue the pressure by inertia. Gradually, however, Real began to act more like Atlético, giving the opponent control of the ball and relying on counterattacks. This method worked when Los Blancos took the lead midway through the second half. And then, in vain, they finally handed over control of the situation to the “mattress guys,” who, in a not very familiar manner, began to put constant pressure on the enemy. And they managed to even the score, sending the game into extra time. It seemed that Real were approaching him in a more spirited state, but defensive errors in the third half crippled the Los Blancos. Saul and Koke scored wonderful goals, knocking the ground out from under Lopetegui's men, who could not find the strength to return to the game. The meeting turned out to be combative, exciting, intriguing and very dynamic. It is obvious that some players have problems with form; not everyone is in the same shape. The game itself is unstable for some and for others, but with such a bright start, the season promises to be interesting.
Of course, the European Cup season can already be considered to have begun, given all the qualifying matches in the Europa League and Champions League. However, usually the signal for the opening of the big European season is the match for the UEFA Super Cup. It will feature traditional rivals Atlético and Real Madrid. Once again, Spanish clubs are competing for the most important European trophies. It is also intriguing that for both teams this will be the first official match of the season. Real Madrid had a good preparation. At the beginning of August, he lost to Manchester United, but then he played out well - he defeated Juventus, Roma and Milan. The confrontation with the Italians was successful. Atlético lived a more varied life. After defeating Arsenal in a penalty shootout, the mattresses lost to PSG, there was a draw with Stuttgart, a victory over Cagliari and a defeat against Inter. As for changes, of course, the main one was Ronaldo's departure from Real - there is a new era in Madrid. With a new coach, the appointment of Julen Lopetegui is considered by many to be a controversial decision. Real didn't buy a star to replace Cristiano, but they bought goalkeepers Lunin and Courtois, although Navas will play in this match. Defender Oyarzabal and midfielder Vinicius also came. Atletico lost Gabi, Gameiro and Torres, but Lemar and Rodri appeared, who immediately found themselves in the starting lineup. Arias, Gelson Martins and Kalinic also joined the squad. These rivals are accustomed to frequent meetings. Last season in the Spanish Championship they drew twice - 1:1 and 0:0. A year ago, they exchanged home victories in the Champions League, but Real won 3:0 and Atlético 2:1.
The start of the meeting couldn't have been better. Already in the first minute, Godin threw the ball long from his own half of the field. Costa very skillfully took the penalty kick on his head in front of the corner, winning the fight against Ramos, from whom he still escaped with a jerk, flying towards the goal. He also slipped away from Varane, and then powerfully shot from an acute angle over Navas’s head directly under the far post. 0:1. Amazing start to the game. Moreover, after the goal, Atlético did not slow down. The “mattress players” acted very agilely, controlling the ball, putting pressure on someone else’s territory, and moving towards Navas’ goal. “Real” could not go on the attack intelligently and gain a foothold. Asensio, Benzema and Bale found themselves almost without the ball. Attempts to carry out attacks through individual actions also led to nothing. Gareth rushed forward - he violated the rules in the attack. Then Ramos, in the center of the field, elbowed Costa in the face. The judge did not warn Sergio, although he could have. Real were clearly out of their element, unable to settle in and start playing their own way. Atlético controlled everything, pressed and pressed, attacking aggressively, albeit without any sharpness after an extremely quick goal. Occasionally, only the forays of Isco and Bale created problems, but Benzema and Asensio disappeared. By the end of a quarter of an hour of the game, Real seemed to have established control of the ball, but it was not really possible to deliver it to the penalty area and into the penalty area - the “mattress players” tenaciously defended. One of Bale's runs brought a set piece on the flank, but no one could get to Kroos' cross. Then Bale and Kroos broke the rules - Atlético did not stop running counterattacks, with no intention of being pinned down. In the 17th minute, Benzema managed to enter the penalty area with a slightly angular dribble through ricochets, but the defender beat him to it. Then, from the left, Marcelo dispersed the attack, crossed with the help of Asensio, who played beautifully with his heel, along the goal line, but the same Karim could not bring the ball in at point-blank range - he simply did not have time. By this time, the Mattress Players had less possession of the ball and rarely went on the attack. But everyone knows that Atlético doesn’t really need this. This team is capable of carrying out one attack and achieving the goal. At the same time, as soon as there were hints of Real’s increasing pressure, the “mattress players” quickly moved away, relieved the tension, moving the game away from the goal. In the 25th minute, Marcelo decided to use his old trick, joined the attack, received a pass from Kroos and shot from the right, but the ball flew over the crossbar. And in the next attack, Benzema, who was already beginning to be criticized for this meeting, rehabilitated himself by joining the attack in time. Bale rushed quickly from the right, got away from the defender and cut a cross to the far post, where Benzema beat Savic in the air and shot in the opposite direction to Oblak. 1:1. The cream of the crop played very well and smartly. And now Atlético should have thought about changing the game a little. And there Asensio decided to support the initiative of his attacking partners and shot dangerously. I went to the penalty area from the left, moved along the line and curled it into the far corner. I missed it a bit. Los Blancos felt more confident, continued to move very well, interacted brightly and clearly. Whereas Atlético stopped showing itself somehow ahead. Griezmann, Lemar and Saul showed nothing at all from the very beginning. An attempt to go on the attack in the 34th minute led to a counterattack from Real. Bale cut a brilliant pass into the penalty area to Asensio, but he hesitated a little and passed the ball to Benzema, who was already covered. The Mattress Players rushed into a counterattack, but Asensio brought down Costa in the center circle, receiving a warning. At the end of the half, Diego Simeone's team, who were led by assistant coach Burgos during his disqualification, became a little more active, but their approaches did not lead to aggravation. Maximum – corners and crosses from the flanks. Lemar tried to find himself on one flank, on the other, but to no avail. At times, Griezmann also got the ball, but in general, all this in the “mattress players” attack looked unconvincing.
Atlético tried to start the second half with attacks, but it was not sharp. Griezmann wanted to make a statement with a long-range shot, but it hit Casemiro. The “mattress guys” decided to play football, which is not very typical for them, and take possession of the ball. Still stuck with Real's defense. Los Blancos played more carefully, less aggressively, as if they were content with a draw. Apparently, they assumed that they would take advantage of their opponent’s mistake at any time if it happened. Lopetegui's team took a wait-and-see approach. Although he decided to rebuild the game, releasing Modric instead of Asensio. And Atlético replaced the unnoticed Griezmann with Correa. The Mattress Players continued to press aggressively, playing short combinations, but they lacked some kind of continuation in front of the penalty area. Correa, who overdid it, even managed to foul right away - he knocked down Casemiro with a yellow card. There was enough charge, but there were no dangerous moments. Real beat their opponents with their own weapon – counterattacks. At first, Bale climbed in the center, but was brought down by Godin, although the referee considered that there was no foul. Then Gareth flew in from the right - Hernandez managed to stop him. And the corner turned out to be fatal. After the play, Juanfran played with his hand, for which the referee awarded a penalty. Costa attacked the referee, for which he received a warning. And Ramos outwitted Oblak from the spot, shooting into the corner. 2:1. Los Blancos' counterattack tactics worked. Another round of confrontation between Costa and Ramos added passion. On the flank, Sergio got ahead of Diego and fell in front of him. The forward did not slow down or move to the side, but ran straight at his opponent, kicking him in the neck. The opponents chatted and argued, but the judge, having severely scolded Kosta, did not send him off with a second yellow card. After the second goal, Real regained control of the ball and territory. “Atlético” seemed to give up in frustration, or “Real” simply caught the courage and became inspired. In the 70th minute, Varan struck a dangerous shot, finishing a cross from the left but hitting Saul. Modric added from afar - above the target. And at Atlético, instead of Rodri, Vitolo came onto the field, more focused on attack. And Lopetegui refreshed the center of the field by replacing Casemiro, who was clearly tired, with Ceballos. And Atlético, having regained control of the ball, still pressed hard. Costa fought well for the ball, it bounced to the flank, where Juanfran caught Marcelo’s mistake, who for some reason saved the ball from being thrown out and gave it to his opponent. Juanfran fed Correa with a pass, who dashed short and shot from the goal line past the goalkeeper under Costa's shot, so that Diego shot into the empty goal. 2:2. Atlético showed that they can score even when playing with the first number. Even with Real. Los Blancos immediately rushed to regain their advantage, and Vazquez came on instead of Isco. Lopetegui's team smoothly seized the initiative and began to surround Oblak's possessions, although there were still no sharp moments. Gradually, the rivals calmed down, realizing the high cost of a mistake. We agreed to wait for additional time. Costa nevertheless got into the penalty area with Correa in the 90th minute, but they did not allow him to shoot. And Atlético added freshness to the attack by introducing Partey instead of Lemar. Real could have snatched victory at the last moment. In the counterattack, Marcelo, falling, completed the serve from the left, but did not really hit the ball. And it would be beautiful.
In the third half, Real continued to stick to its line and attack the opponent harder. The situation at Oblak's penalty area became tense. In one of the first attacks, Carvajal hit well from distance, but hit the goalkeeper. “Atlético” sat on the defensive for a long time, very carefully rolled into the opponent’s half, but how. Costa carried the ball from the left, fought with Varane, but was covered by a defender. But it was not possible to get out of defense. The same Varane was covered by Partey at the penalty line, took the ball, played with Costa and crossed from the left, and Saul volleyed brilliantly under the crossbar. 2:3. Everything was played out very beautifully, and it should be noted that the third of Real's four defenders made a scoring error. Lopetegui had no choice - he sent Mayoral into the attack instead of midfielder Kroos. However, he did not have time to change anything. Costa dealt with Carvajal on the flank, crossed towards the penalty line to Vitolo, who extended the touch to Koke, who immediately fired into the bottom corner. 2:4. Amazingly cool Atlético, squeezing tears from the eyes of Real Madrid fans in the stands. Already in the fourth half, Vitolo himself could complete the combination. He got a good pass from Partey, but the forward took it on his chest rather rudely in the penalty area - they managed to cover it. Then, amid applause, the main hero of the match, Costa, was escorted from the field and was replaced by Jimenez. And Vitolo continued to work on his goal. He flew into the penalty area, beat Carvajal twice, gathered a crowd around him, but still got confused and shot at his opponent. It is logical that the “cream” went on the attack more often, but somehow monotonously and doomedly, without invention or zest, so it was not difficult for Atlético to defend to the end.
Man of the match: Diego Costa
This is someone who is heading into the season in amazing shape and has done an incredible amount of work. The fastest goal in UEFA Super Cup history was only the beginning of Costa's extravaganza. He brought Atlético back into the game by scoring a double. In extra time, both scoring attacks were also started and largely created by Diego.

The UEFA Super Cup is a football tournament founded in 1972 by Anton Witkamp, a reporter for the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, which kicks off the new European club season. This competition is held in August and is attended by the winners of the Champions League and Europa League of the previous season.
As of 2016, 42 UEFA Super Cup finals have been played. This tournament was won by 24 different clubs, the most titled of which are Barcelona and Milan, which won 5 times each during the entire existence of the tournament. The first winner of the European Super Cup was the Dutch Ajax.
The Union of European Football Associations refused to hold the debut draws of the UEFA Super Cup on its own behalf. Only at the end of the 1988/99 season did UEFA officially approve a tournament called the “Super Cup”, in which the winners of the Champions League and Europa League of the previous season began to participate.
The founder of the tournament, Anton Vitkam, wanted the cup winner to be determined based on the results of two matches. In the beginning, this was the case, only in rare cases did the fight for the Super Cup consist of one fight. But since 1998, UEFA has stipulated that the competition must be played exclusively from one match on a neutral ground.
In 2008, St. Petersburg Zenit won the UEFA Super Cup, defeating the 2007 Champions League winner Manchester United with a score of 2:1. By the way, the Blue-White-Blues are the only club from the CIS to win this trophy.
In 2015, the most productive match in the history of the UEFA Super Cup took place; the Spanish clubs Barcelona and Sevilla scored 9 goals between them. This was one of the most dramatic matches of the tournament, in which, in the end, the winner was the Catalan club, defeating Sevilla with a score of 5:4.
