t world athletics ended in London on Sunday evening. 19 Russian participants, who were allowed to start and were forced to compete under a neutral flag, managed to collectively win six medals - one gold and five silver. This result allowed the team to take ninth place in the final standings, where the US team convincingly excelled - 30 awards (10-11-9). Kenya finished in second place (5-2-4), and South Africa (3-1-2) in third place. The British, the hosts of the tournament, remained in sixth position (2-3-1).
For comparison, two years ago in Beijing, even before the introduction of tough sanctions, Russia was in ninth place (2-1-1). And in London 2017, our athletes are fifth in the total number of awards.
The only victory was brought to the country by the high jumper. Second place in their events was taken by (110 m hurdles), (hammer throw), (long jump), as well as 20 km walker Sergei and high jumper, who performed on the final day.
It is curious that the 18-year-old debutant of competitions of this level, Shirobokov, has achieved significant success in the discipline, with the investigation of abuses in which the case (WADA) against the All-Russian Athletics Federation (ARAF) began several years ago.
In 2015, the athlete won the Youth World Championship, in 2016 (at the age of 17) he became the youngest champion of Russia among adults, and last July he won the Junior Championship.
Shirobokov was born in a small village in Udmurtia, and trains in Saransk.
“The coaches gave me instructions and I followed them,” SE quotes the athlete as saying. - No problem. The tactics were simple: grit your teeth and stay in the leading group. Don't go forward. And at 19-20 km - turn on at full speed. And so it happened. In general, I am practically self-taught. Once there were athletics competitions, and the physical education teacher said: “Sergey, go for a walk.” So I tried it. I was about 14 years old at the time. I didn’t even know what race walking was and that it existed until that day!
I guarantee that I have never taken doping. Didn't even touch it. Doping tests say this better than me. I lost count of how many times I was checked.
How can we talk about doping if our team passed as many samples as other teams never dreamed of?”
The Colombian became the champion at a distance of 20 km, beating the Russian by two seconds (1 hour 18 minutes 53 seconds versus 1:18.55). Brazilian Caio Bonfim took bronze.
For women in this discipline, Klavdiya Afanasyeva was disqualified due to three warnings. At that moment she was in seventh, trying to get closer to the leaders. According to Shirobokov, after the story with his compatriot, he was afraid that the judges would put pressure on him too.
“But, fortunately, everything worked out. No questions asked! - he added. — By the way, when I walked, I was thinking not only about myself. When it got really hard, I said to myself: “Don’t you dare give up! You suffer not only for yourself, but also for all those who have not yet been allowed in.” I assure you, if our guys, “twenties” and girls had gone to the 50 km, we would have had a lot of medals. And it would be easier for us as a team. It’s still not easy one at a time.
Now my goal is to win two or three Olympics. “Everything is possible if the starts are held on different days.”
“I believe that this result of the Russian team can be considered successful. Even before the start, I said that I expected six to eight awards from the guys, and they fulfilled this task. I rate their performance a four on a five-point scale. We showed that even with this composition our team is capable of putting up a fight. You see, our team is very small - they admitted us selectively, and not the full team, which could go to London, and then we would have more medals.
At the World Championships in Beijing we had two golds, a silver and a bronze. Judging by the gold medals, our result then, let’s say, was better in quality, but in London we won more awards.”
Among other results on Sunday, it is worth highlighting the victory of the South African runner in the 800 m race (1 minute 55.16 seconds) and the success of the Croatian discus throw (70 meters 31 centimeters).
In the 4x400m relay, gold went to athletes from Trinidad and Tobago (men, 2:58.12) and the USA (women, 3:19.02).
Kenyan Eliyah Motonei Manangoi is the new world champion in the 1500m (3:33.61), while his compatriot Helen Obiri was unmatched in the 5000m (14:34.86).

Big scandal in London at the World Athletics Championships. Athletes have been hit en masse by the virus. One gets sick, another - and now dozens of athletes from different countries are not at training and competitions, but in quarantine and exhausted. Among them are those who claimed medals.
A new championship record was set far from the stadium: 30 athletes from different countries fell ill at once. They all live in an expensive hotel in the very center of London, next to Tower Bridge. Our team also lives here.
“Almost no one has diarrhea, vomiting or fever. It is so serious that it spreads quickly. They even turned off the air conditioning system in the hotel. The laboratory arrived and found out that the virus is transmitted through hands, utensils, and equipment,” said Elena Orlova, official representative of neutral athletes at the World Athletics Championships.
This infectious disease is called "gastroenteritis". Usually it's not that bad. But not for athletes at the World Championships. The infection requires the athlete to isolate for 48 hours, so Botswana runner Isaac Makwala missed his start. He was one of the contenders for a medal. His performance in the 400-meter race is a big question mark.
“He feels weak, he has no strength and we have been advised not to run,” says Botswana Athletics Federation president Tari David Muketsi.
Even if the athlete manages to recover, he will no longer be at the peak of his form. This means that he will not be able to show his best result. Canadian journalists attack the team doctor. Nine athletes fell ill at once. Germans, Estonians, athletes from Uganda, Belarus and Ukraine fell ill.
The hotel administration is urgently trying to prevent further spread of the infection.
Fourth floor. This is where most of the sick athletes live. They all stayed here. But the Russian athletes who lived on the floor were moved to another.
The biggest changes are in the hotel restaurant. Now here is the inlet for hand sanitizer. Previously, athletes served their own food. Now this is done by waiters wearing gloves. Sick athletes do not leave their rooms. There are empty water bottles in the corridors - doctors recommended drinking plenty of fluids.
This prestigious hotel now resembles a children's camp. There are signs everywhere: “Have you washed your hands?”
The representative of our team, Elena Orlova, went to meet the jumper Maria Lasitskene. Elena received her form in advance. Maria will definitely not come to this hotel. Of those Russians who already live here, none have complained of health problems.
“We either got sick or no longer, that is, our immunity has worked, and for new athletes we will look for a new hotel, although the organizing committee warned: there are very few available rooms, it’s difficult to find,” says the official representative of neutral athletes at the World Athletics Championships Elena Orlova.
The organizers of the championship together with the British authorities are investigating the causes of the mass infection. The hotel management has already issued a press release saying that the hotel is not the source of the disease. However, for infected athletes this no longer makes any difference. Their chances of winning are now much less.
The Russian national team was not at the World Championships in London, but athletes from Russia won six awards - a paradox to which, however, everyone has already become accustomed. Athletes from our country at the main tournament of the two years competed under the faceless abbreviation ANA (authorized neutral athletes), could not display not only a flag, but even a manicure in the colors of the Russian tricolor, and did not have the opportunity to perform the anthem of their country in case of victory. But, despite everything, they achieved an excellent result: they won a total of six awards, one of which was gold, and the rest were silver.
High jumper becomes world champion Maria Lasitskene, who dealt with her rivals like a grandmaster. The height of 2.03, taken by Maria on the first attempt, turned out to be victorious: none of her competitors managed to match the Russian woman.
A champion without question. Maria Lasitskene took gold in London
Maria Lasitskene arrived in London as the undisputed favorite. And she confirmed this status by becoming a two-time world champion.
At a distance of 110 meters with hurdles, he did everything possible to win, but still ended up second, losing only to the objectively faster Jamaican Omar McLeod. Gorgeous Daria Klishina finally jumped to the first medal at major international competitions: 7.00 - silver result. The hammer thrower came in second place Valery Pronkin, who promised his father that he would bring a medal from the World Championships. And the last day pleased Russian sports fans with two silver awards: the 20-kilometer walker distinguished himself Sergey Shirobokov and high jumper Danil Lysenko.
Thus, Russian athletes won more awards in London than two years ago in Beijing (six versus four). However, in the Celestial Empire our team had two champions, and in Foggy Albion - only one. But no matter how many medals there were, none of them counted towards the Russian team, because the IAAF in no way associates them with our country. By the way, do you think the medals won should be considered Russian?
There was still a tricolor!
Despite the total ban on national symbols for Russian athletes, our tricolor still appeared on the running track in London. Moreover, this did not violate any IAAF rules. The fact is that Russian journalist Vladimir Ivanov finished first in the 800-meter race among media representatives working at the World Championships in Great Britain. And finished with the flag! There was no strict ban on such actions, although the recommendations of the international federation noted that in order to avoid provocations, it is better not to use national symbols. Vladimir took a risk and entered the spotlight as the only winner of the tournament who was allowed to openly declare that he came from Russia. A trifle, but nice!
Bolt Crash
The greatest sprinter wanted to retire after his triumph at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, but he allowed himself to be persuaded and agreed to compete in London. Alas, the decision turned out to be a mistake. At the 2017 World Championships, Bolt had two attempts to retire with his head held high, but failed to capitalize on either one. In the 100-meter race, the eminent Jamaican lost not only to the American Gatlin, but also to his compatriot Coleman. After the finish, Gatlin knelt in front of Bolt, but he was still defeated.
And in the 4x100 meter race a real drama unfolded. Bolt, on the fourth stage of the relay, received a baton in the top three, but by the middle of the distance he limped, stopped and fell. In the end, the eight-time Olympic champion was unable to finish his last race in his career. But this raised the question: will he agree to such an end to his career?
The king's final show. Bolt failed to complete his final career race
Usain Bolt failed to complete his final career race. The great sprinter was taken away from the sport by his teammates.
A champion with a dark past
After Gatlin's victory in the 100-meter dash, the sports world was divided into two parts. Some congratulated the American athlete and considered his victory fair and deserved. Others were disappointed and noted that Gatlin did not deserve to win. The stumbling block was the fact that the American sprinter had previously been caught doping twice. Head of the IAAF Sebastian Coe called Justin’s victory “an imperfect scenario,” which, when translated from diplomatic into Russian, means deepest indignation.
Coe: Gatlin winning one of the main awards at the World Cup is not an ideal scenario
But be that as it may, Gatlin won in London in full compliance with all anti-doping rules, and blaming him for anything is simply stupid. Justin became the first track and field athlete in history to go 12 years between victories at the world championships. And one of many who found themselves on a tectonic fault that arose during the doping earthquakes.
Turkish sensation
The most unexpected triumph at the World Championships in London, of course, was the victory of the Turkish athlete Ramilya Gulieva in the 200 meter race. For the first time in a decade and a half, a white sprinter won a gold medal at this distance. Guliyev, who was born in Azerbaijan but recently received Turkish citizenship and the opportunity to compete for this country in international competitions, brought her the first gold medal in the history of the World Athletics Championships. Guliyev performed well in the final, showing a result of 20.09 and ahead of the South African Weide van Niekerk, who planned to compete for gold not only at the 400-meter, but also at the 200-meter distance. Of course, fortune also helped Guliyev in some ways, but in the end, the strongest always becomes the champion.
The infection that broke the leader
And the World Athletics Championships will be remembered by many of its participants for the outbreak of rotavirus infection - more than 30 athletes from different countries suffered from it. The world leader of the season suffered the most at a distance of 200 meters Isaac Makwala from Botswana. First, he made it to the finals in the 400-meter race, but he was simply not allowed into the stadium. Undoubtedly, the illness unsettled the favorite. And even despite the fact that a personal qualifying race was arranged for him at a distance of 200 meters, Makvala, who reached the final, generally did not fight for medals there - he finished sixth.
Today, August 12, the European Athletics Championships ended in Berlin (Germany). 48 sets of awards were raffled off. Russian athletes, who competed in a neutral status due to the disqualification of the All-Russian Athletics Federation (ARAF), won one gold, three silver and two bronze. In the overall team competition, the British took the lead (7-5-6), the Poles were second (7-4-1), the Germans were third (6-7-6), the French were fourth (3-4-3), the Belgians were fifth and Greeks (3-2-1 each). In terms of the total number of awards, the first are the Germans (19), the second are the British (18), and the third are the Poles (12). This was reported by the All Sport Agency.

The 2018 European Championships ended in Berlin. Let's sum it up.
Vladimir IVANOV
from Berlin
For Russia the tournament turned out to be a mess. Something is not going well for Russian athletics in Berlin. Nine years ago, the World Championships were held here, which were remembered mainly for failures: then for the first time in my career, I failed, I became fourth when I was in excellent shape, and three gold medals of the walkers were canceled a few years later due to doping violations.
Misfires of Leaders
This time, everything somehow went wrong. The sad news began even before the start of the tournament. The favorite to win at the height of the 20-year-old was suspended almost on the eve of the departure due to three flags. This immediately set an unimportant tone.
Unexpectedly, Angelika Sidorova flew past the pedestal. And even if there was a conditional bronze, she would hardly be happy. The athlete came here to fight for victory.
He openly ignored the results of the photo finish. These 13.17 are like betrayal for him. With this result, he didn’t care whether it was first place or fifth. He thought about other timelines. But the winner, Pascal-Martino Lagarde, cried at the award ceremony, burying his face in Shubenkov’s shoulder.
And even our only champion of Berlin did not feel much joy from her next victory. Which was also harder for her than expected. The next day she thawed out, but still she will hardly remember this start with delight.
BLOOMED APPLICATION
If the leaders were chattering so much, what can we say about the rest. 10 out of 29 Russians who arrived did not even qualify. Yana Smerdova was disqualified from walking for three violations. Evgeny Rybakov was 20th in the 10,000 m.
Only seven can take the current championship to their advantage. Without question - Timur Morgunov. Maria Lasitskene. The decathlete, who, although he didn’t reach his personal best, gave himself without reserve. Ilya Ivanyuk, who arrived without a coach, but, despite the stressful situation, for the first time in his life overcame 2.31 m. Which is 52 cm higher than his height. Rinas Akhmadeev, who dropped as much as 11 seconds from his 5000m personal best. 20-year-old Vasily Mizinov, who supported the prestige of Russian walking at the debut start of this level. And Polina Miller, who at the age of 18 was not afraid of a 50,000-seat stadium - and set another personal record in the 400 m. She is now the leader of the European season for athletes under 20 years old.
All this is not enough to call the performance a success. If in London 2017 there were 19 Russian athletes, but they won six medals, then 29 of our athletes came to Berlin 2018, and again there were six prizes. And last year there was a World Championship, and this year there was a European Championship. It's a huge difference.
SHUBENKOV AND BOUQUET LASITSKENE
At the same time, there are no questions regarding the atmosphere in the team. Our team is not even listed in the team competition on the official website. The organizers explain this by saying that the ANA countries are not. The Russians here are like Tom Hanks in the movie "The Terminal". In fact, there is, according to the documents - not quite.
However, this does not demoralize our people; on the contrary, they still hold on to each other more tightly. The athletes supported each other on social networks, and those who had already performed came to the stadium to cheer. You should have seen how Lasitskene shouted during the award ceremony for Shubenkov. Even among fans of Sergei Lazarev, you can hardly find such emotions when your idol appears. Sergei waved his arms, danced, jumped, begged for a bouquet and single-handedly tried to shout over a crowd of several hundred people. It was very fun and kind.
Such unity sets the mood for positivity. Another thing is that in elite sports this is not enough. Our team needs to bring back the winning spirit. In this sense, the medal of 21-year-old Timur Morgunov in the pole vault inspires optimism. For the athlete from Chelyabinsk, the current European Championship is only the second foreign start in his life. But how desperately he fought! His 6m is a space jump for Russian athletics.
NEW STARS
Berlin produced many interesting results, but the main discovery was 17-year-old Jacob Ingebrigtsen. A white Norwegian became the youngest runner in history to win the European Championships. Jacob won the 1500m with 3:38.10. At the same time, this season Ingebrigtsen ran 3:31.18. And a couple of days later, the Norwegian also took gold in the 5000 m. 13.17.06 for a person who, by law, is not yet allowed to drive a car, this is powerful.
It is curious that at the recent Junior World Championships he was left without gold - the Kenyans became winners at both distances. However, serious marketers are already working on Ingebrigtsen. He is positioned as the white man who will be able to break the dominance of Africans in the middle races. After Usain Bolt's retirement, world athletics needs a new superstar. Maybe an unusual Norwegian will be able to take the place of the departed king?
Another contender is Swede Armand Duplantis. The 18-year-old pole vaulter is incredibly good. In terms of results, even preferable to the Norwegian. His fantastic 6.05 m is the second best result in world history. Only Sergei Bubka was higher.
