Knowing how to jump on a bike is an extremely useful skill. This skill can keep you out of trouble, stop you from worrying about curbs and curbs, and prepare you for big jumps. Today we will tell you about the bunny hop technique, it will allow you to achieve a high, controlled jump on any pedals.
Beginning cyclists often learn the wrong jumping technique, colloquially called Hop ( from EnglishHop - jump). With this technique, both wheels are immediately lifted off the ground. The technique, although easy to learn, is ineffective in terms of flight altitude and control over the bicycle. While standing on a bicycle, you bend your arms and legs, and then push the bicycle off the ground with all your strength. It turns out something like this:
Bunny Hop ( from EnglishBunny-Hop - hare jump), or “bannik” allows you to control the height of the jump and the moment of lift-off of the rear wheel, which can be extremely useful. It’s much easier to do it in, but we recommend learning on regular stools, then you will have the correct technique (with contacts it’s easier to pull the back of the pedals) and you’ll be able to do it in any conditions.
1. Trying to manually
The first thing you should do is ride a little on the rear wheel, that is (from the English Manual). The goal of the exercise is to lift the front wheel into the air, but not to use the banal rebound of the fork, but also the correct technique.
In the basic stance we talked about in, you ride in a straight line. Heels down, knees and elbows slightly bent. First you load the front and rear wheel:
Then, without straightening your legs, you begin to move back, straightening your arms at the same time. At some point the front wheel will leave the ground. If you are afraid of falling on your back, then keep your finger on the rear brake, so you can react in time and prevent a fall by simply pressing the brake lever. Never pull the steering wheel towards you by bending your arms, this is the wrong technique!
2. Straighten your legs
Once the front wheel is high enough in the air, you should straighten your legs and “stand” on the pedals. When you stand up, your hands and handlebars are down, this will be the beginning of the next stage.
3. Push the steering wheel, tuck your legs
At the top point, when you are standing almost vertically on the pedals, you need to simultaneously begin to tuck your legs in and push the steering wheel forward and up. This is where clipless pedals help, people start pulling the bike with their feet instead of pushing them, this is the wrong technique.
At first you may be able to make small jumps, but over time your bunnie will grow to a decent size, you will learn to combine manual and bunny hop, jump over obstacles in the form of benches, pedestrians and curbs, and also use this technique on springboards.
Professional hint: Look at your friend's face during his banner and try not to die of laughter.
The guys from GMBN have a great video where Neil breaks down all the steps. Serge Rasklad kindly translated it:
One of the set of standard basic tricks is the bunnyhop or “bannik” - a jump used to overcome various obstacles. Used in the following disciplines: bmx, less common on the highway.
Before attempting more complex elements, cyclists are advised to first master their bunny hop technique. In addition to jumping, this trick also helps to make it easier to navigate regular turns.
Before you start practicing on a bicycle, you should pay attention to study the theoretical part in detail.
Getting ready for the bunny hop
Bannik is a complicated version of such an element as hop, which is a rise above the ground at the same time at high speed of the vehicle.
To perform a hop, you need to cling to the bike and sharply push up. When pushing off, the initial position of the limbs on the steering wheel and pedals does not change.
- Front pull is a movement during which the front wheel of the bike is raised. The initial position of the element consists of a horizontal position of the cyclist's legs slightly bent on the pedals and the body tilted forward at a slight angle.
To lift the front wheel off the ground, you need to continue to move it backwards, while at the same time pulling the steering part towards your stomach. The body needs to be straightened.
It is important to remember that lifting the wheel does not occur by jerking your arms with great force, but by moving the center of gravity to the rear of the bicycle.
The end point of the front pull is with the arms and legs fully extended, as well as the torso. It is worth considering an important detail - lifting the wheel for bunny hops does not require.
To return to the starting position from this movement, you need to shift your weight back and slowly lower the bike onto both wheels.
- Back hop is a jump with the rear wheel. The starting position of this element is similar to the starting position of the front pool - the pedals are horizontal, the legs are slightly bent at the knees, the body is tilted forward at a slight degree.
To perform the movement, you first need to quickly, but without making a jerk, transfer your body weight to the front wheel, while simultaneously starting to straighten your arms. Afterwards, you need to completely straighten your limbs. The feet take a toe-down position, which should be lowered 45 degrees.
In order to return to the starting position, you only need to straighten your legs. But you should also remember that to perform a return to the starting position, you cannot lower the weight on the bike.
If, when trying to lift the rear wheel of a bicycle, your feet do not stay on the pedals and fall off, the angle of inclination is insufficient.
The bunny hop should only be attempted after the front pull and back hop techniques have been honed through separate training for each exercise.
How to perform a bunny hop
After the technique of the components of the banner has been honed to perfection, you can begin to connect them.
- The front pool bunny hop begins.
- Next, the cyclist must shift the weight of his own body forward, slightly bending his legs at the knee joints in parallel.
- Then you need to transfer your weight to the rear wheel, straightening your limbs.
- The body gradually straightens, leaning back. Along with the tilt, you need to further stretch towards the abdominal area, not forgetting about the technique - lifting the front wheel does not happen with the help of a jerk with your hands, but by moving the weight.
- The rider reaches a position with the body, legs and arms straight.
- Immediately after achieving the torso position indicated in the previous paragraph, a back-hop is performed. You need to rest your feet on the pedals, placing them vertically. Using the muscles of the legs, you need to begin lifting the rear wheel. The hands are used to guide the bike towards the desired forward height.
- The next step is for the cyclist to squeeze his knees while continuing to pull the handlebars forward.
- Afterwards, the center of gravity must be moved back, tucking your legs. This position is typical for the maximum height of the element being performed.
- During the landing, the main efforts are made by the lower limbs, as the rider will need to maintain balance.
It will be easier to land on the rear wheel than on both.
Bunnyhop on BMX
Very rarely used by riders for transportation. The main purpose is tricks.
The technique for performing a banner on such a bicycle is almost no different from what was described above. But there are several factors that will help you achieve a good jump to great heights.
The increased reach of the bike can only guarantee a low jump, but pulling it back at the moment of performing the trick is much easier. It is best to set the steering wheel to the middle position, as it facilitates not only simple dragging, but also high jumping.
Correct foot placement involves placing your feet under the pedal. Due to this "tightening" it achieves better contact with the pedal, which helps to achieve greater effect when lifting the rear wheel.
When pulling up, it is advisable to bend your arms a little to tighten the steering part.
With the help of these tips it will be easier to learn how to make the coveted banner.
- on any bicycle - this is a rather traumatic event. Especially at a time when the rider is just learning a new element, it would be better to provide protection - a bike helmet, knee and elbow pads, closed shoes.
- Keeping the wheels in a locked position with assistance is necessary until the bike lands.
- The first attempts to do a bunny hop on a bicycle should not be accompanied by the installation of obstacles, as there is a high probability of failure.
Only after the cyclist is confident in his abilities and can jump well without obstacles, can he try to perform a trick over a small obstacle, such as a box, a stone, or a curb.
The box is one of the safest options for obstacles for a beginner, since when bumped it will crumple and will not cause you to fall off the bike.
- The training area should have plenty of space for acceleration and subsequent landing. You should not choose a place with many uneven areas or a large slope.
- Don't be afraid of falling. It is necessary to believe that in the end you will be able to do a bunny hop.
Bunny hop (from the English “bunny hop”) is a bicycle stunt, jumping on obstacles or over a barrier using a bicycle. At the beginning of the trick, the cyclist (rider), quickly raising the front part, moves to the back of the bicycle, then lifts the rear part without lowering the front part. You usually need to go down either on the rear wheel, or on 2 at once. Jumping with 2 wheels at once is not a bunny hop.
Using the bunny hop trick, you can jump up and over quite high barriers, over one meter high. It should be noted that world record for bunny hop belongs to American cyclist Jeffrey Lenosky. Its result is - pole jump 168 centimeters. With the bathy hop you can perform many tricks, such as no-foot, crankflip, barspin and others. The bunny hop is a fundamental trick and needs to be learned especially in street and.
When bunny-hopping, it seems as if the pedals on the bicycle are being held by the raider’s legs, and as if the bicycle becomes very light and comfortable in the air, like a skateboard. And the bicycle pedals seem to stick to the feet when a person performs a trick. In addition, jumping is one of the first and most basic tricks a cyclist must learn. The Bunny Hop can be quite challenging to learn, but mastering it unlocks a whole new level of possibilities for the type of motocross bike - BMX and mountain bikes.
Bunny hopping is also a useful skill for urban cyclists to avoid injury and other hazards, and to quickly set up barriers for future stunts.
Most often, the trick is done on BMX bikes, which weigh less than mountain bikes and are much easier to perform tricks.
Trick technique
Jumps are performed at approaching obstacles at medium speed, arms and legs should be slightly bent. After reaching the obstacles, the rider needs to move the center of gravity to the rear wheel of the bike and pull the handlebars. As a result, the front wheel will rise in the rear wheel. At the same time, like a rider's pedals, press them vigorously onto the bicycle pedals, and continue to push in a circular motion. This will allow them to "pull" the rear wheel up, applying force to the pedal towards the rear of the bike. The combination of these two movements creates the impression that the cyclist is directly lifted into the air.
Bunny hop bmx- the basis of cycling, looks like jumping on a bmx. Want to know how to do a bunny hop? Then you need to first of all carefully read this article “how to jump on a bmx”. And also read the information in the lesson “training bunny hop video” (how to) at the bottom of the page. Mindfulness will help you quickly and without injury learn how to jump high and good bunyhop using the site. Since each person’s abilities are individual, everyone will understand how to do a bunny hop on bmx in their own way. But it’s still worth reading and trying to grasp for yourself the main features of performing a trick on a bicycle. bunny hop. A cool banik will make it easier to learn tricks such as tailwhip.
If you master the trick called bunnyhop at a good level, then other elements associated with it will be much easier to learn. So, bunny hop training(bmx jump) I advise you to start by learning how to lift one rear wheel. You can learn more about this in the video below. At first glance, it may seem impossible to lift your bike into the air without clipless pedals (the mechanism that attaches your shoe to the pedal). It's a delusion. To lift one rear part of the bike (you need to be able to do this in order to know how to learn bunny hop), ride the bike standing with your legs bent, the connecting rods (the spare part of the bike that goes from the pedal to the frame) should be in a parallel position relative to the ground - the correct bunny hop technique is A. Tilt your feet forward a little, about 30 degrees (an important point in jumping training). At first, pay special attention to this; in the future, this movement during bunihop will become automatic (clearly noticeable in video training). Of course, this will help in training such elements as smith grind and others.
How to do bunny hop bmx - description of jumps
And so, shift your center of gravity (or simply lean a little) forward and try to move your feet back up. If your feet are not inclined, and you simply move your legs up, then you will lift them off the pedals, and the bike will remain in place (the main difficulty when you want to understand how to do a bunny hop and how to jump on bmx). And so try this element until you feel that you are doing it confidently (for clarity, look video training). Further, as a transitional stage, we can advise you to learn how to simply hop. This is a bmx jump with two wheels at the same time. It can be useful (as user Nalim believes), but studying it is not at all necessary, since similar bmx jumping will never be as high as pure bunny hop on bmx. To do a hop, you need to combine the movement with your legs, which is described above, and a jerk with the handlebars up. Before this, you must squat on your feet to lift your wheels off the ground as high as possible.
It is worth recognizing the fact that if you are not able to jump high without a bicycle on the ground, then you will not be able to do a good and high bunny hop with a bike. So the height of a bmx jump directly depends on your physical strength. Let's consider the next stage after the hop. They will be learning the "bunny hop" itself, also known as the bunny hop. By the way, the trick got its name precisely because of its similarity to a rabbit jump. That is, when your front part rises up first, and then the back part follows (to learn how to, watch the video how to). In order to understand how to do bunny hop, You need to ride on bent legs, transfer your body weight back, while lifting the front wheel. At the same time, you need to push off with your lower limbs, then lift the back of the bmx. If you are tired of reading, you can break away for a while and play bmx master on our website. What you should pay attention to is the choice of average speed when training bunny hop (as in how to). When riding fast, fear will interfere with learning a new element (you may still not understand how to jump on a bmx); at low speeds, unpredictable behavior of the bike is possible for various reasons, such as, for example, the friction force of the tire on the asphalt. It will increase at low speed, and the jerk you make during bunny hop on bmx will be misunderstood by the great.
How to jump on bmx - do a good bunyhop
bmx bunny hop- this is a trick when you need to merge with the bike so that it repeats all your movements during a jump (for clarity, carefully study the lesson with video training of banik). The movements themselves should be moderately sharp. That is bunny hop It shouldn’t look like you first drove a manual for some time and then jumped (it will be more correct to learn this way). On the first day you are unlikely to jump a meter high; stability and height come with experience. The more often you try to do a bunyhop, the better your body will remember the movements and bring them to automatism. When increasing the height with a bunny hop, you should pay attention to the moment when you raise the back, the front should not be at its maximum point, but also rise. Remember that choice
It is not difficult to learn a bannik, depending on perseverance and talent, it can be learned in about 2 weeks, and you can stretch it out for half a year, if desired.
There is an opinion that the easiest way to learn a banner is on BMX, this is true. The most difficult thing is on a dual-suspension system, and even on the cheapest one, where the suspension damping is not adjustable. It would be nice to have “evil” foot pedals and shin guards. But we must not forget the most important thing: you can learn from anything, if only you have the desire!
How to actually jump a bannik over an obstacle
(box, bottle, parapet, etc.):
The area where you are training should have enough space for landing and acceleration, it should be level and not have a slope (jumping downhill is quite difficult for a beginner).
Psychological preparation: Look at the obstacle! Don’t think that you can’t, don’t be afraid to fall (put your index finger on the rear brake lever, for courage, but only your index finger, leave the rest on the steering wheel!). Estimate roughly where you need to start lifting the front wheel. How to determine the distance? You just need to jump and the distance will determine itself, with time and experience.
The first and most important step:
Get the front wheel off the ground!
For this:
on a rigid fork: We roll calmly, not quickly, not slowly while standing on the pedals. Be in the middle of the bike! Then, quickly lean back, bending your knees! Do not bend your arms, tense your back and try not to bend either. The bike will rise quite high, but not yet in a controlled manner! so in the surf you have to pull it out. Note author)
on a soft fork: it seems more difficult, but in fact it is easier than on the hard one. We roll calmly, not quickly, not slowly while standing on the pedals. Use the fork as a momentum stimulator. Be in the middle of the bike, then quickly, but not abruptly (not an explosive movement!) lean a little forward, then immediately back, arms straight, back tense, and knees bent (only the knees can be bent!).
The second movement smoothly turns into the third.
It’s very difficult to explain; it’s easier to show)))), but I’ll try:
So, you are offset and over the rear wheel, knees bent and arms straight, back tense...
Now you need to move towards the steering wheel, i.e. you begin to straighten into a “candle” position. Your hands become at the level of your navel, and your body straightens along the bike, your knees unbend, your legs straighten.
And this is where the third movement begins:
You yourself got up, but the bike is still on the ground. We need to tear it off. To do this, we support (!!!) it with our hands up and forward, and with our legs we press it under ourselves. !All movements must occur simultaneously quickly and clearly without delay!
(note: It’s not as easy to press as it seems. You need to try to lift the rear wheel off the ground on a plane without lifting the front one! To do this, you need to kind of lean between the steering wheel and pedals and bend your legs)
The bike will rise into the air, although not by much at first))))
The fourth movement is flight:
When the bike is in the air, you need to try to place it parallel to the ground. To do this, bend your legs at the knees, pulling the bike under you, and lower your arms, the front wheel will lower and the bike will take a natural position (the wheels are on the same line parallel to the ground). But you will remain above the rear wheel/saddle.
Fifth final - landing:
And it’s better to land on the back, because it’s softer))) So, everything is in reverse order. Hands towards you, bend your knees, lower your legs down. When the rear wheel touches the ground, tense your back! Slowly straightening your arms and bending at the waist, place the front wheel, i.e. a few cm in the back you will ride, ideally!)))))
All. Happy landing! You made a banner through an obstacle and remained alive)))
