How to prepare for the GTO?
In order to answer this question, let's first remember what GTO is
“Ready for Labor and Defense of the USSR” (GTO) is a physical education program in general education, professional and sports organizations in the USSR, fundamental in a unified and state-supported system of patriotic education of youth. Existed from 1931 to 1991. Covered the population aged 10 to 60 years.
Passing the standards was confirmed by special badges. To receive such a badge, you had to fulfill a given set of requirements, for example: run a hundred meters at speed, do push-ups a certain number of times, jump from a tower into the water or throw a grenade
In 2014, the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the return of the “Ready for Labor and Defense” system. According to the Minister of Education Dmitry Livanov, starting from 2015, the results of passing the GTO complex will be taken into account when entering higher educational institutions.
All requirements for passing the GTO standards are defined in this document “State requirements for the level of physical fitness of the population when fulfilling the standards of the All-Russian physical culture and sports complex “Ready for Labor and Defense” (GTO) dated July 08, 2014. Number 575.
Who should take the GTO?
There are no mandatory requirements yet, but the number of people who have passed the GTO is included as an indicator of the governor’s effective work. So schoolchildren and all possible state employees will soon take the test on a voluntary-compulsory basis. At least, it very much seems so to me.
How to successfully pass the GTO standards?
If you train according to the Shanti method (the “Land of Heroes” marathon) or practice CrossFit, then you definitely won’t have any problems with passing the GTO standards. You can easily get your bronze badge; silver or gold, of course, will require a little effort. But in general everything is quite easy to achieve. But if up to this point you haven’t lifted anything heavier than a mug and your favorite sport is “couch football,” then you should take your preparation more seriously.
Where to begin?
You should start with an honest assessment of your performance. Download the file from the link above. Choose your age and try to do all the exercises that are intended for your age at an average pace. If you can do all the exercises without taking into account time, then that’s good. Just repeat all the exercises at least three times a week and in a month you will be ready to take the GTO standards. If you can’t handle this approach, then let’s start preparing together for passing the GTO standards.
In the next article I will tell you how to learn how to do pull-ups in the shortest possible time. To avoid missing this article, subscribe to site updates.
At the Iskra stadium, on a wet path strewn with fallen leaves - it’s good that the rain has just stopped! - Alexey Voevoda, throwing off his warm jacket so that just by looking at him everyone around him shivered... “It’s so warm!” – the Voivode grinned, reading everything from our faces, and began to pass the GTO standards.
I call the cozy stadium, a seven-minute walk from the Botanical Garden metro station, cinematic. Today we filmed Alexei Voevoda here, and tomorrow at Iskra we were already expecting a visit from the film crew of the film magazine Yeralash, a documentary film about Semyon Farad, who lived nearby for many years, was filmed here, some scenes from The Capercaillie, a local cafe serving Uzbek cuisine is often visited director Pavel Lungin. But enough of the lyrics. In my bag I have a certificate in the name of Alexei Voevoda and a gold badge issued by the Military Sports Foundation. In this foundation, the only one that currently issues badges (the official badge has already been approved by the President, but has not yet been issued), the Minister of Sports Vitaly Mutko and synchronized swimmer Olga Brusnikina managed to pass the standards.
They promised me that Vitaly Leontyevich could join the Voivode and pass the standards again - it would not be difficult for the minister, but it didn’t work out in time.
TILT FORWARD
Alexey Voevoda did everything so quickly that it was difficult to follow him. Here he goes up to the elevated platform that we used instead of a gymnastics bench for bending... He passes for a gold badge, we prepared just such one for him in advance, we couldn’t believe that the two-time Olympic champion would suddenly not cope and pass for a silver one. But, as it turns out, such a danger existed...
“It’s a pity that Vitaly Leontyevich couldn’t keep me company,” said the Voevoda, bowing his head a little from the height of his outstanding height (192 cm). – I would love to compete with Vitaly Leontyevich. It would be difficult for me to compare with him. I would definitely lose to him. The Minister of Sports is a different level.
– The Minister of Sports must be athletic. I think no one doubts that I am still capable of passing the GTO standards. Various people often come up to me - officials, bankers - and want to fight me in arm wrestling... And I... lose to them! For what? I make a person feel like a champion. It's priceless! But I need to win at professional competitions, I have to prove myself there.
Standards: *
+ 6 cm – 3 points
+ 4 cm = 2 points
Reach the floor with your fingers – 1 point
PRESS
Alexey waves away the gymnastics mat: “Yes, I can do it on the asphalt!” With some difficulty, Voivode, who is deeply indifferent to weather conditions, manages to persuade him to lie down on the rug.
The Iskra instructor sits on his feet, and the thought still haunts me: what would it all look like: a great Voivode - and suddenly with a silver GTO badge...
– And you, a two-time Olympic champion, would agree to a silver badge?
– Actually, back at school, in the second grade, I passed with gold. And then - you can’t look down on silver. Silver is a much rarer metal than gold. The rarest metal! If all the gold is taken to the surface of the earth and distributed evenly, it will be half a meter, and the silver will cover the earth by only 5–7 centimeters. So silver is much more valuable than gold.
Standards:
40 times in 1 minute. – 3 points
35 – 2 points
30 – 1 point
3KM RUN
“Oh, how easy it is to run,” and the best accelerator in the world, having lost sleep due to night filming, left the start for a distance of 3 kilometers. Here too it easily fits into the standard, and after the finish we have the opportunity to draw some conclusions.
- Alexey, all this is ridiculously easy for you, but let’s imagine: in your place there is office plankton...
– This concept is irrevocably a thing of the past. Office plankton is no longer relevant after the Olympics in Sochi. I noticed that people began to run and train a lot more in the morning. And the standards... Downward slopes are the only controversial element. I don't understand what kind of load they give. Strengthen your back? This is not the best exercise for strengthening your back. To stretch, yes, but then you need to bend down from the bench as low as possible.
Standard for 3 km run:
12 min. 50 sec. – 3 points
14 min. 20 sec. – 2 points
15 minutes. 10 sec. – 1 point
PULLING UP
For Voevoda, nine pull-ups on the horizontal bar are enough. Easily lifting his chin over the bar, he can speak freely.
– You passed these standards as a second grader. How does it feel to return to childhood?
- Many years later. But I haven’t changed... Not long ago I participated in a discussion about food additives, about pharmacology, and I said: “Gentlemen, we do not have one, the most basic concept - methodology. It ceased to exist after pharmacology appeared. But the methodology needs to be revived.” The GTO is the very golden thing that we have left from the times of the Soviet Union, the same methodology for selecting personnel for sports and life.
Standards:
9 times – 3 points
6 times – 2 points
4 – 1 point
STANDING LONG JUMP
According to the rules, three attempts are given for the standing long jump. A half-sleepless night makes itself felt. On the second attempt, Alexey Voevoda flies away at 2.90.
And here it is, the promised story about Bison:
– We had such a bobsledder – Dima Chernov from the village of Navli in the Oryol region, he, unfortunately, no longer competes. He argued with the Americans, who claimed that it was impossible to jump 3.60 from a standing position. Dima didn’t want to jump at first. But when they told him it was $200, he took off his shoes and jumped 3.75 barefoot. And when he did this, the Americans in their unique way: “What the... beep, beep, beep,” you know, the kind of expressions on television that are usually masked by beeps. Naturally, they gave this money and then spent a long time measuring where he could start from, looking at his feet, but he was barefoot, without spikes. They were all trying to figure out what the catch was. And the catch was that Dimka Bison is a country guy, a real person from a Russian village, from the Oryol region, from Navli, they are all like that... We have a lot of them in our country.
Standard:
2 m 35 cm – 3 points
2 m 25 cm – 2 points
2 m 20 cm – 1 point

They know that I am trying to achieve a gold result in the 3-kilometer run. According to modern GTO standards, it is golden and for my age it is 12.50 minutes.
As a child, I played a lot of football, but at the same time I really hated running long distances. Short ones, please. But every time at school, at competitions or at university there was a long test against the clock, I became depressed. I didn’t know how to run properly, I didn’t want to learn how to do it, and in general, “fuck you, I’m already handsome.”
I remember all those cases when you stand at the start and wait for the go-ahead. Adrenaline begins to boil, and the familiar trembling appears in the limbs. Jitters before the start. At such moments there is one more circumstance that is not discussed in polite society and in front of ladies.
Before an important start, he often puts pressure on the point. I don’t know why, most likely the same adrenaline rush is to blame. These sensations go away right after you start. Here all the energy of the point has to be redistributed to other reserves of the body, which are responsible for endurance and help us not to die from stress.
So this is from the GTO.
Before I saw the sign with the standards, I set myself the task of running 2 km in 10 minutes and not vomiting. Seems like an easy target, right? Moreover, on the track in the hall. But for an unprepared person, like I was a couple of months ago, this comes with wild difficulty.
I must say that I still haven’t run out of ten minutes, although (judging by my feelings) I have reserves and if necessary, I will meet this time.
A week ago I worked out in the gym and ran 4 km as a warm-up.
I ran in crappy shoes that were not designed for running, and after the race my knee hurt terribly. That day there was still a leg workout and I most likely overdid it because I had discomfort in my knee for the rest of the week.
My knee hurts because of the meniscus, which I injured in football. Didn't do any operations. I didn't even know what surgeries did since it was many, many years ago. And, apparently, I have to live with such a bad knee for the rest of my days.
I admit honestly, I wanted to give up and not force the meniscus, so as not to fucking worsen the injury.
This is what my crappy shoes look like (photo from the day I set a personal best at 16.33)
I didn’t run all week, I just walked a lot, including along the street.
Well, today I decided for myself that I would try to run out of 16 minutes(the best result before was 16.33) and I’ll finish my attempts with the stamp “failed another goal.”
This time I wore “better” shoes that soften the impact of running. I even warmed up and got the blood running down my legs. Last time I ran 3 km against the clock? We must show a good result!
I walked around, collected my thoughts for about 15 minutes and ran.
The first thing I want to say is that clothes and shoes make a difference. From the very beginning I felt how much easier, bitch, it is to run when there is good enough shock absorption.
I covered 2 km at around 10.20 and realized that I still had a lot of strength to accomplish the impossible and fit into these notorious standards of “ready for work and defense.”
The final result is 14.32. I made it to bronze and was just a little short of silver.
At the same time, the meniscus remained alive and hardly reminded of itself.
Now, having tried other shoes, there is every chance of achieving a golden result and beating yourself in the chest with your fist.
Well, watch whether I reach the end or not
I’ll say right away: neither my friends nor my family understood my decision to pass the standards of the All-Russian GTO sports complex. Indeed, isn’t it funny - at the age of 40, running and jumping for the sake of a badge on your chest? But the easy-going editorial team was pleased: it turned out that the idea of passing the GTO did not originate only in my head.
Where to start?
Together with my colleagues, we followed the path trodden by schoolchildren: first we registered on the GTO website, and then, with passports and individual numbers obtained on the site, we went to the GTO testing center in Minusinsk. But first of all, go to the prevention center for a certificate of health. We didn’t find any particular health problems, so the doctors, with a light heart, wished us to pass all the standards, as befits healthy and physically strong people - “gold”.
At the GTO testing center, we learned that there are a lot of “adult” participants in the complex in Minusinsk, but unlike schoolchildren, those of age have to prepare hard to take the GTO.
Nonsense, we decided, we need to prepare, so let’s prepare! Who knew then that it would take me, for example, exactly nine months to prepare myself! But first things first.
Running: pain and joy
Having learned that running a distance of two kilometers is a mandatory standard for all ages, we went to the stadium. Young colleagues easily covered this distance, noting with satisfaction that they met the “silver” time limit. But due to their age, the GTO requirements for them according to all standards are very strict! I... barely ran one lap (400 meters)! Pain in the knees, shortness of breath, sweat like hail and a heart ready to jump out of your chest. By an effort of will, out of anger at herself - a wreck, every now and then taking a step, she completed three more laps, and walked the last one. Needless to say, I didn’t even make it to bronze in time? But I considered myself a physically developed person! Wait, when was the last time I ran? Over the past 20 years, perhaps, I haven’t even run 100 meters...
After severe disappointment in my form and several days of depressed mood due to the premature onset of senile infirmity, I finally decided to go to the gym and get on the treadmill. Here new difficulties awaited me: how not to “fly off” from it, what speed to choose to begin with, etc. The pain in my knees didn’t allow me to run at a slow speed, and I didn’t have enough breath at a fast speed, so I ran, constantly changing speed, which made me even more tired. But I have a lot of patience, and therefore, despite aching joints and muscle pain, I started every day on the treadmill. A pleasant bonus from these workouts was a dramatic weight loss. Over time, shortness of breath went away, youthful flexibility returned to my knees, and my cardiovascular system returned to normal, thanks to which I completely forgot about the faithful companion of recent years - headaches.
With the onset of warm days, I went to the stadium again, this time to the school stadium. Luckily for me, it wasn’t that crowded: a couple of women were walking their dogs, and three other old ladies were taking a leisurely stroll. Either my brain made a comparison in favor of the latter, or my subconscious rebelled, and only this time I managed to overtake them five times without stopping or taking a step! Later, however, I found out that school stadiums have a smaller meter, that is, I ran not two kilometers, as I thought, but one and a half.
Therefore, I decided to consolidate my success on the treadmill tomorrow. And she did it! Those who have at least once overcome their limits will understand the storm of emotions that I experienced when I finally ran those ill-fated two kilometers! The joy was overshadowed by the pain in my ankle: I got off the treadmill, unable to even step on my foot.
At the prevention center, the traumatologist was not surprised: many novice athletes are ready to break their foreheads for the sake of results.
This is how sports injuries occur. In general, due to inflammation of the periosteum, I had to forget about sports for two months. And then - build up the lost form gradually, trying, as the saying goes, “to hurry without haste.” And soon the emphasis shifted from covering a distance of two kilometers to the time required for this. 16 minutes, 15, 14.40... And for “gold” for my eighth age level I need to run two kilometers in 13 minutes. And so, when I had almost come to terms with the fact that I wouldn’t see “gold”, the coach advised me to exclude my favorite porridge for breakfast, replacing it with... boiled eggs. If someone else had told me what effect this has on the muscles, I wouldn’t believe it, but... after a protein breakfast, I covered 2 kilometers in 12.40! Is it any wonder that on the day of passing the running standard my diet consisted only of eggs? In general, I ran two kilometers with a big head start: in 12.15. My colleagues are also “gold”: the years spent in the gym took their toll. For me, the adrenaline I received was enough for general cleaning of the house.
The next test was cross country. What is rough terrain? A slide, a hole, a bump... When you wander through the forest in search of mushrooms, you take it for granted and don’t whine. But while running, you feel all these irregularities with all your insides. Especially if it’s autumn, and there are slippery leaves and pine needles on the ground, liquefied by rain. However, there was moisture not only under our feet, but also in the air: as if testing the “athletes,” a light drizzle began to fall in the morning... How we managed not to slip on the track, I still don’t understand. But the result is excellent: three “golds” and one “silver”.
Difficult to learn, easy to fight
We prepared more, probably mentally, for the next standards. Because daily training of 1.5-2 hours had already really strengthened everyone, and in principle we were ready for new sports records. But... One was sure that she would not be able to “swing” her abs 45 times in a minute, the other was worried that she would not be able to jump 1.80 m. Personally, I had a low opinion of my flexibility, and it was precisely this that needed to be demonstrated by leaning forward from standing position with straight legs on a gymnastic bench, while lowering your arms below the level of the bench by 13 centimeters. And here’s what’s amazing: exactly what scared us most, we succeeded on the first try, even for those who only took up sports in April! It really is: difficult to learn, easy to fight.
"Defensive" aspect of the GTO
The problem appeared where it was not expected. Knowing that one of the VSK GTO standards is shooting with an air rifle, my colleagues and I purchased it in the hope that regular training would provide us with accurate shots. However, with each shot, most of us moved further and further from the bull's eye...
Relying on luck, we took the risk of surrendering. And just to be on the safe side, with your own supposedly “targeted” rifle and your own bullets. On this day we were convinced: luck is on the side of those who take risks! Luckily for us, Leonid Petrovich Savelyev, the champion of the fourth regional polyathlon Spartakiad, was in the hall. It was he who told us a couple of nuances that would allow us to calm down the trembling in our hands and gain Olympic calm. For example, we knew before that it’s better to shoot while exhaling, but we didn’t know that after pressing the trigger you also need to freeze! I think this was precisely our main mistake, because our colleagues’ eyesight is excellent, and it would be stupid to blame their vigilance. The fact is that when you press the trigger, the bullet just begins its movement along the barrel, and you need to wait a while so as not to move the weapon or direct it along the wrong trajectory. We were all impatient to see the result, so we dropped the rifle almost while we were pulling the trigger! As a result, after a smart master class, each of us easily scored the coveted number of points.
Knight move: push-ups
For “dessert,” another colleague and I left push-ups. But not because it was our favorite exercise. On the contrary, we pushed back the inevitable, like a person on a diet refuses cake, realizing that he still won’t be able to resist it. So did we - no matter how hard we tried, we just couldn’t straighten our arms as soon as they touched the floor. Here, master classes from males (colleagues, husbands, brothers) did not help: we only watched in amazement how easily their bodies, stretched out, took off and fell back to the ground, as if they did not feel the force of gravity. On the Internet, all the advice boiled down to one thing: start doing push-ups from a vertical surface, gradually dropping lower and lower. But these gradual declines were of no use: as soon as we dropped to the floor, our hands were unable to tear our bodies away from it.
And again the coach of the Sibiryak sports club helped, which became a kind of training base for our team for the GTO. Vitaly Bakharev suggested to us the “knight move”. They say that at first you can deceive your body. There is no point in trying to rise with your body stretched out like a string if it doesn’t work. Lift up with a backbend. But get up! Over time, you will feel that you will be able not to fall on the floor, but to stop a centimeter from it. And that’s exactly what happened! Only by using this trick were we able to learn how to do push-ups, which ultimately led to passing the last GTO standard almost on the last day of 2017.
Yes, at the age of 40, passing the GTO with “gold” is not at all funny. When the impossible becomes possible, when you yourself regain your former flexibility and strength, pushing aside not only frail old age, but also its harbingers in the form of minor bodily problems that pop up from time to time - these are incredible sensations! At this point, even friends and family are unable to refute the obvious. And, perhaps, the most interesting thing: in nine months I formed a new habit: not a day without sports. Well, isn't that great?
