In this article we will look at what guitar strumming is, how to play it correctly, what types of strumming there are, and much, much more.
I'll tell you more about:
Fight six
The six strike is the most popular strum on the guitar. It consists of six movements and sounds something like this:
This particular recording is part of a song from the song “Pass”, which is played by this battle.
Fight four: scheme, how to play
The four-piece fight is also referred to as Tsoyev’s fight, because it is used in some of his songs.
what does it sound like
In the recording, I play the Kino song “A Pack of Cigarettes” in fours.
The battle scheme looks like this:
Down - Up - Down with cap - Up
- swipe your thumb down;
- thumb or index finger up;
- index finger down (nail);
- thumb or index finger up.
Tsoevsky battle: schemes, types of battle
The Tsoi fight is actually not one at all, there are at least 3 of them, one of them is the four fight, which you see above. But there are other types, and they sound like this:
first fight of six movements
There are 6 basic movements and there must be great speed.
B - thumb, U - index finger
At the very beginning we play from the end: down B - down B - up B - down U
Then we play all the time: down B - up B - down B >>>>> down B - up B - down U
another Tsoi fight consists of 7 movements:
down B - up B - cap - up B - down B - up B - cap
Thieves fight: scheme, how to play
To be honest, I learned about the thug fight on the guitar quite recently, when I started preparing this article :) The essence of this fight is that the bass strings change when playing. That is, first we pluck one string, then we pluck it along all the strings, and then we pluck another string - and again we pluck it along all the strings.
sounds like this
We pluck the B string > down with our index finger > pluck the other string (not the bass) > down with our index finger.
scheme of thieves' battle
Bass string - Plug - Bass string - Plug
You can pluck the bass string both times to avoid confusion.
Fight eight: scheme, how to play
Fight eight consists of eight movements and sounds something like this:
This particular piece was cut from Basta’s song “Sansara”, in this song the figure eight is used.
Eight battle scheme
Down - Down with a plug - Up - Up - 3 times in a row down with a plug - Up
3 types of combat that EVERY guitarist should know video
What is guitar strumming
I promised I wouldn't use any weird words, so...
What is combat? The strumming is a cycle of repeated movements of the right hand near the sound hole (read: guitar structure). In short, roughly speaking, this is what you do with your right hand on the strings, and more precisely, these are actions when you hit several strings at once.
Fighting should not be confused with strumming a guitar. Fingering is also a cycle of repeated movements with the right hand, but here we mean the fingers. That is, repeated movements of the fingers. Each string has its own finger. And in battle we use the whole palm, and even clench our palm into a fist and other movements.
How to play boi on guitar
How to play strum on the guitar? The question is controversial and does not have a clear answer. There are many types of guitar strums - and they are all played differently. There are no such uniform movements for all fights, each of them is unique.
There is only a small list of movements on the strings, which usually make up the fight:
- running your thumb down the strings;
- running your thumb up the strings;
- stub;
- an open strike on the strings (similar to a mute, but without the mute).

Another playing technique that is quite suitable for this song is combat, or, as some also call it, “half-fighting.” I will also post it in a separate post.

P. P. S. For those who don’t know: a “piece” is an ensign.

In one of the previous posts, I already provided a detailed analysis, which can be performed by accompanying yourself with a minimum number of chords: three in the simplest version or four - with a slight improvement that is easy for beginners.
In this post I present the following song that can be played using the same ones - this What is autumn groups DDT. I’ll make a reservation in advance that initially there are more chords in it, but for educational purposes we can afford to simplify it, and then, as we improve our skills, diversify it with other chords, thereby getting closer to the original.
So, we will need:
- Remember those simple chords with which, according to legend, you can play half the songs: Am, Dm, E. You can refresh your memory of these three chords.
- You will need to remember how a universal fight is performed, or otherwise.
- A chord will be added A7, which has already been used in . This chord is a frequent companion of the “thieves’ trinity”; it, as a rule, dilutes the transition from the Am to Dm chord.
- A chord will be added F, which is usually difficult for beginners due to the barre technique, although it can be played in a simplified version without the barre. More on this later.
But first, I will give the exact sequence of chords, drawing the attention of beginners to the fact that repetitions of chords in song lyrics are usually not indicated, although they are implied by the logic of the rhythmic pattern:
Am E Am Am A7 A7 Dm Dm
Dm E Am F Dm E Am A7
Dm E Am F Dm E Am E
Chorus:
Am F Dm E Am F Dm E
Dm E Am F Dm Dm E E
To consolidate this sequence and rhythmic pattern, I suggest watching this video lesson by Dmitry Mishin.
Lyrics and chords of the song “What is Autumn” DDT
Am E AmWhat is autumn? This is the sky
A7 Dm
Crying sky underfoot.
Dm E Am F
Dm E Am A7
Dm E Am F
Birds with clouds fly in puddles,
Dm E Am E
Autumn, I haven’t been with you for a long time.
Am F Dm E
Autumn. Ships are burning in the sky.
Am F Dm E
Autumn. I would like to get away from the Earth.
Dm E Am F
Where sadness drowns in the sea,
Dm E
Autumn, dark distance.
What is autumn? These are stones
Loyalty over the blackening Neva.
Autumn, you reminded my soul of the most important thing,
Autumn, I am again deprived of peace.
What is autumn? It's the wind
Plays with torn chains again.
Autumn, will we crawl, will we reach the answer -
What will happen to the Motherland and to us?
Autumn, will we crawl, will we live until dawn?
Autumn, what will happen to us tomorrow?
Chorus (2 times)
The city is melting in a flock into the darkness.
Autumn, what did I know about you?
How long will the foliage be torn?
Autumn is always right.
I suggest watching another useful video, which clearly shows how, when and what chords to play. I will note some features of the performance: the same “six” strike is shown here, but sound production is made in a different way - connected by the index and thumb; The second nuance is that just before the end of the chorus there is a Dm/C chord, which may seem difficult for a beginning guitarist, but this is another improvement that can be introduced in the future as an option.
Simple melodies.
Traditionally, one of the first guitar melodies given to students to master is considered In the grass Grasshopper sat- two of my friends who don’t play the guitar at all said that they had once learned it and could reproduce it... How to play the melody “A grasshopper was sitting in the grass” on the guitar in the simplest way is shown in the next minute video.
I think everything is clear here, and comments would be unnecessary. And now for a surprise! The familiar Nokia ringtone is played on a guitar very simply. This is shown in another short video tutorial. Having learned to play this melody, you can not only joke with your friends who have such a ringer installed on their phone, but also learn a rather funny and useful exercise aimed at developing guitar playing skills: on the one hand, all actions are carried out on the upper frets of the guitar (which can be difficult for beginners), and at the same time, the distances between the upper frets are small, you don’t need to stretch your fingers, everything is nearby.
And since we’re talking about ringtones, I’ll give you another simple melody known to everyone from the movie “Boomer”. Compared to the previous one, it is very elementary. But here everything happens on the lower frets (close to the headstock), the distance between which is greater. And this is another good finger workout.
Although I do not agree with the note values shown by the performer in his own playing example, many thanks to him for the accessible lesson! And in order to “even out” the rhythm within yourself, it can be useful to listen to a masterful performance, which I present at the end of this short note. This is no longer an easy melody for beginners, but soon you will be able to play it the same way!
P.S. Pay attention to the playing technique used at the beginning and end of the composition: in order to quickly play on one string (the lower one in this example), it is plucked alternately with the middle and index fingers. I recommend learning.
Guitar fight- This is a type of accompaniment (accompaniment), which consists of striking the strings with the fingers of the right hand or with a pick. Before you understand what combat is, you need to understand what rhythm is - this is the ratio of the durations of sounds (notes) in their sequence. Notes can have different durations and the durations of these notes form rhythmic figures, forming a rhythmic pattern of a musical work. Rhythm is not tied to absolute units of time; it gives only the relative durations of notes. The rhythm of a musical piece performed on a guitar can be set using guitar picking, plucking or strumming.
How to play jamming?
Muting the strings can be done with both the right and left hand. When muting with the right hand: Muting is usually done with the edge (base) of the palm, it is not necessary to press with the whole palm - just tilt the palm, but do not move it. When playing with a pick, the edge of the palm usually lies on the saddle (on the bridge). Muting with the heel of the right hand is referred to by many guitarists as palm muting. It is used more often when playing on the . If you need to completely mute a separate chord, so that without various impurities of the current chord, you can move to the next one just with the palm of your right hand touching all the strings. Another way is to put the thumb of your right hand on all the strings, simultaneously with the blow (on in fact, immediately after the blow). That is, after hitting the strings, the thumb mutes the strings. If you have learned the muting technique, try using it to play the “four” strike, described below.
Fight four (4)
Four is the simplest guitar strumming. Suitable for almost all songs, due to its simplicity. In the diagram, down is played with the thumb, and up with the index finger: down – up – down with mute* – up
Fight six (6)
Six is the most common fight. It is also known as “army battle”, “ordinary battle”, “yard battle”. They can also play more than half of all songs. The simplified scheme of the game looks like this: down – down – up – up – down – up
In fact, to play this stroke it is necessary to use an idle stroke of the hand - that is, taking into account pauses when the hand moves without touching the strings on the 2nd and 5th strokes. Accordingly, the game scheme is as follows: down - up without touching - down - up - down without touching - up - down - up
Fight six (6) with jamming
In this example, the jamming occurs on the second and fifth blows (downward blows) after the same time: In the diagram: down – down with mute* – up – up – down with mute* – up
Fight eight (8)
The eight-piece battle is played in four-beat time. When playing, the thumb and index fingers are used. The emphasis is on the first and third downbeats. down – down* – up – down – down* – up – down – up
* strike down the strings with your thumb
Spanish fight
A more complex technique of fighting is Rasgueado, which is more often popularly referred to as “Spanish fighting”, and is divided into descending, ascending and circular rasgueado: Descending rasgueado- means that you hold an open palm and, starting with the little finger, assemble a fan from your fingers into a fist, alternately touching the strings with your fingertips, starting with the little finger (the thumb does not play). Rising Rasgueado– is performed by gathering the fingers under the hand (with the exception of the thumb) and opening it like a fan, running each finger in turn, starting with the index finger down the strings (the thumb does not play).. Ring rasgueado- a combination of two rasgueados: ascending and descending, which is often accompanied by a combination of striking the strings with the thumb of the right hand (usually down - up - down).
Conclusion
We have not considered such types of combat as, for example, blatnoy, but it is played on the principle of plucking, only instead of plucking, a strike with the index finger is played on the strings, alternating with a strike of the thumb on the bass strings. There is an even more “complicated strumming”, which is played in such a way that we strike the bass string with our thumb, then pause and strike the lower strings upward with our index finger, strike the strings downward, followed by muting, and upward again. You can still find various examples, but in general we have looked at the basic techniques of fighting. The main thing to understand is that the beat sets the rhythm of a piece of music, which means it can be very different. Most guitarists who master the technique of playing the guitar no longer need to explain which beat to use in the game, since they can simply reproduce it based on the developed over the years, a sense of rhythm. If you do not yet master the fighting technique, then first try to perform it without jamming. When training, it is recommended to memorize your actions with the words “up”, “down with muffling”, etc.
Four- the simplest guitar strumming. At the same time, they can play 90% of all songs.
It's played like this:
down – up – down with mute – up
We play down with our thumb. Up with your index finger. Marked with an asterisk jamming.
How to play jamming?
You clench your palm into a fist and straighten it so that you hit the strings with your nails. At the same time as you strike with your nails, you need to place your thumb on all the strings. The nails make a click, and the thumb muffles the strings.
Once you've learned jamming, play with it. fight four described above.
Video: Fight four and jamming the strings
For working out battle four play the band's song Kino-Pack of Cigarettes
Chords Em Am C D.
One beat for each chord.
Do not hurry. Spend as much time on this strum and these chords as you need to play with confidence and not have to worry about where to stick your fingers. Some people need a week, others a couple of months, it doesn’t matter.
Also practice the standard sequences with this fight:
Am Dm E Am
Dm G C Am
Em C G D
Six- the second easiest fight. And the most popular.
They can also play 90% of all songs. In many songs fight six sounds more driving than fight four.
In addition, thanks to the presence of pauses, this battle can be played much faster than a four-man battle.
It's played like this:
To better understand how to play it, play this structure:
down-up-down-up-down-up-down-up
Those. just down and up 4 times, each blow of the same duration.
And then throw out 2 blows from it, the second and the fifth (these are up and down blows).
But don’t just throw them away, but run them through with your hand without touching the strings. This is called idle hand.
Those. the hand always moves up and down with the same frequency, sometimes it just doesn’t play, it moves idle.
This principle is based not only fight six, but also many others.
It's more clear in the diagram:
- Black arrow - strike the strings
- White arrow - idle (hand moves, but does not play)
- Down arrow - play down, up arrow - up, respectively
The second way to understand this fight:
We break it into 2 parts and work on them separately:
1) down-up idle-down-up
2) down idle-up-down-up
Now let's combine both parts.
Practice battle six thoroughly using our already favorite sequences:
Em Am C D
Am Dm E Am
Dm G C Am
Em C G D
Play the same fighting six song Cinema-When Your Girlfriend Is Sick
Chords G Em C D
In the chorus C D G Em
One strum for each chord
As we can see, in the lead and in the chorus the chords are the same, it’s just that in the chorus the sequence starts with the C chord
Let's add jamming to battle six.
How to play jamming is described above in the four-man battle.
As we already know, six taking into account pauses it is played like this:
down – down – up – up – down – up
Jam on the second and fifth strike (downward strikes)
It will turn out like this:
down – down with mute – up – up – down with mute – up
Jamming is marked with asterisks.
The muffled impacts will occur after the same amount of time, i.e. they will keep the rhythm.
Yes, in fact, it is easily noticeable if you count the number of shares from one asterisk to another.
It is equal to four.
